I don't know what "soft determinism" is, but no one has said laughter in a child (or an adult for that matter) is a waste of time.

Not everyone finds the same thing funny, child or adult.

I'm not so much into jokes as finding life situations funny. Maybe this girl is that way. Try telling her something strange, weird, amusing that happened to you for real.

Could be it's an introvert/extrovert thing. I don't know if you're an intro or an extro boom, so this may not apply to this situation.

At heart I'm an introvert. Doesn't equate with being shy or fearful, I just get worn out being in groups, or even spending a bit of time with a big extrovert. In groups especially, there's this expectation almost that you will enjoy what everyone else is doing, and participate.

I can enjoy what others are doing, but may choose to observe. There you are, having a splendid time watching, participating a little, and someone asks you why you aren't having a good time. Saying "I am" will not convince them.

Going along with the crowd is tiring in that you're not being try to thine ownself.

Standing up for your right to participate to only your comfort level is tiring because you must defend that right.

I'm not sure extroverts will ever really get that, as they seem to feel they are doing you a favor dragging you into the crowd.

Not in this case perhaps, but in another one, maybe this girl is perfectly happy and content, may not laugh on the outside, but is doing it on the inside.

Just as people wouldn't want to repress someone who is naturally exhuberent, I'm not so sure it's good to push someone naturally the opposite the other way.

That reminds me...

What is the difference between roast beef and pea soup?
You can roast beef but you can't pee soup.

I think potty humor wins every time. Just go up to her and fart. That should do it. Or play her that scene from Naked Gun where Leslie Nielson goes to the bathroom during a press conference and forgets to turn his mike off. That's a killer.

@chai2,
Give it a rest Chai. This girl doesn't want or need your protection; she's playing a game with Boomerang.

She could be someone who enjoys more physical humor, too. I once made my 3 year old spit milk by strapping to pointy birthday hats to my chest, pulling them out, and letting them snap back.

... ok, maybe you shouldn't try that with someone else's kid.

I don't want to sit down and tell her a life situation story. I want to see her on the street and say "Hey, "Julie", knock-knock" and see if I can make her laugh.

It's a mission to tell a kid a joke, not a mission to become her friend or somehow violate the integrity of her personhood.

@DrewDad,
you're a real pain in the ass sometimes drew dad.

I know boom is doing right by this particular girl, so get over yourself.

I'm talking about in general now, not about this particular girl.

As stated before, until boom said the girl challenged her to make her laugh, I had no idea if the kid wanted to be part of this or not.

So, it's ok for you to question or give an opinion that whatever therapist boom was talking about may not be right, but it's not ok for me to give an opinion on on same area?

I just figured there were enough knock knock jokes thrown out there, and people might want to talk about in general who to approach a person who may or may not want to be part of what's going on.

For me, personally, I'd not want to be someone's mission. For others, they'd jump at the chance.

@boomerang,
again, I'd already said you answered the question as to if the kid was a willing participant....maybe the kid doesn't even like jokes, as I said before, and it looks like, free duck too.

Since you've got plenty of jokes now, I was moving on....

I'm wondering more about adults who DO violate the integrity of someone's personhood, by not considering if the person wants to be a part of this.

So start a separate thread, and quit derailing this one.

Learn some netiquette.

@boomerang,
My feeling is that the little girl does not have a close relationship with either parent. A little child brought up by a close member of the family who plays with the toddler with little games usually is happy and laughs a lot. A child brought by distant parents shorn of any intimacy is usually emotionally challenged and incapable of natural laughter. At that age jokes are usually over their heads. Kids respond better with slapstick comedy.

This is a pretty damning diagnosis, doc. You got any actual facts to back it up?

@boomerang,
Have you considered just making a long string of farting noises? Any time she starts to say something, just make a big raspberry on your arm....

Maybe she just hasn't met a joke yet that she thought funny enough to laugh about.

There are very few jokes I think are laughably funny. They make me smirk or grin but rarely do I laugh.

Now commedians that do physical commedy or wind funny yarns into the storytelling will get me everytime.

Red Skelton, Jonathan Winters, Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart, Andy Kaufman, Lily Tomlin, Steve Martin, Robin Williams are good examples of the types of commedy that make me laugh out loud.
