I guess you're right. You really have to have lived in both a Fahrenheit-speaking country and a Celsius-speaking country (and through -40 degree weather) to get that.

@Kolyo,
We do. In the Winter we use Centigrade so we can say how far below zero it is. In the Summer, it's Fahrenheit, so we can say how close to 100 it is. 30 degrees C doesn't sound nearly as hot as 86 degrees F.
