@Lustig Andrei,
Oh...the strain. Makes me wish I had taken more math courses...and paid attention.

I'm sure I would love this one...if I could only understand it.

@Lustig Andrei,
The funniest part of that is the last line....

Quote:

A mathematician, a physicist, and an engineer are riding a train through Scotland.

The engineer looks out the window, sees a black sheep, and exclaims, "Hey! They've got black sheep in Scotland!"

The physicist looks out the window and corrects the engineer, "Strictly speaking, all we know is that there's at least one black sheep in Scotland."

The mathematician looks out the window and corrects the physicist, " Strictly speaking, all we know is that is that at least one side of one sheep is black in Scotland."

I know what you mean. I saw it a day or so ago. I was planning on posting it and asking here what it exactly meant. You know... just in case a real genie grants me three wishes.

@tsarstepan,
Here's hoping Lustig comes back and 'splains it.

@Frank Apisa,
She asks for the number of wishes to be thought of in terms of its absolute value, so -1000 wishes count as 1000, because the absolute value of -1000 is 1000. When she wishes for her wish count to go down by 1000 at the end that takes her wish count from 0 to -1000. But the genie has already granted that -1000 wishes count as 1000, so she ends up with 1000 more wishes.

I haven't figured out why she had to make the first wish, though.

Kolyo just did.
(To be totally honest, I wasn't sure I understood it myself.)

@Lustig Andrei,
Well I don't understand it!

Can anyone tell me what the hell her first wish is about? Confused

(Otherwise I will lose sleep.)

If wishes are counted separately, then every time she made a wish, that would be -1 wish on her tally. By wishing for them to be counted by absolute value, then every wish would be 1 instead of -1. In effect, she gave herself an infinite number of wishes. I think.

@FBM,
That sounds quite reasonable to me.

@Lustig Andrei,
Woah. It's been a long time since I posted anything reasonable. I think we need to wait for a second opinion...

I suspected that's how absolute values might have worked out. Thanks Kolyo.

@hingehead,
Nice!

You do have to wonder, though, reading that, whether it's her saying that or some guy
on Yearbook committee who hates her for her looks and wants to get her out of his head.

If I were her I would have gone with:

Iodine Meitnerium Oxygen Oxygen Copper Tellurium Fluorine Oxygen Ruthenium

Safer.
