It wasn't the gambling aspect, it was the way the dogs were treated. Although the industry is (was) somewhat regulated, many dogs were abused. Most had short sad lives with many injuries. The lucky ones were put up for adoption, but the majority were killed when they became hurt or too old to run. There were many witnesses who claimed some dogs were beaten when they did not perform as expected. Why do we need dog races? Let people waste their money on internet poker or at casinos, at least only the gambler and his/her family gets hurt.
that's what i thought. in our neighborhood, there lives a lady that rescues greyhounds that used to be used for racing. all had big injuries and would otherwise be put down. poor thing, at first i thought she was a severe animal abuser, i followed her for a few blocks, wanted to call police on her.... luckily i asked littlek first if she knows her and found out she rescues them. felt like an idiot, but oh well. live and learn.
EDIT: 'our neighborhood' = Cambridge, MA. I live in The Hague now, but Cambridge is still in my system somehow.
