You all seem to forget Hillary was also playing to the middle. Her actual policies were probably more far right than was evident in the early stages of the election just as Obama keeps changing his policies and WORDS OF CHANGE like a bad tie.

When, oh when will abortion be the non-issue in elections that it is in reality?

@Lash,
Tell that to your party.

A friend of mine just pointed out that this is in fact the second time that McCain has picked a beauty queen half his age to advance his political career.

Pretty funny. But, he just nailed the huge emotional impact that I suspected would be missing from the GOP convention....

This should solidify BPB's vote:

@Lash,
It's certainly a better pick the Romney or Pawlenty, but a riskier one as well. I think she will do a good job shoring up a frankly disenheartened conservative base, but I don't see her drawing many independants - she's farther to the right then McCain is!

He's tacking right when he should have tacked to the center; hardly a good strategy in the GE.

Palin Pick Causes 'Elation' among Evangelical Leaders
August 29, 2008

Wow. Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is John McCain's pick for Vice-President. Folks, this is s close to a game changer as you can get.

Let me give you some instant reaction. I can tell you that The Brody File has been talking to multiple sources in the conservative Evangelical community and the reaction has been EXTREMELY POSITIVE. As a matter of fact, I am told that when conservative leaders heard the news this morning at a meeting at the Council for National Policy, one attendee told me that there is "nothing but elation. People are giddy. They are energized and they now believe that in fact this campaign has the ability to win this election."

@RexRed,
Rex, I know you're trying to twist this into some kind of Republican coup, but I don't see how this is going to win the election for McCain.

I get that it can be taken as a strong position on abortion. I get that it can be taken as a strong position on creationism.

Now explain to me how this sways moderate voters who mostly believe in having abortion as an option and who mostly believe in keeping religion out of school.

Shall we go back and look at some of Barack’s ex-girlfriend’s or is that type of low life attack off limits?

Apparently not…

It sways them to show that McCain is not a male chauvinist pig like Barack Obama, considering the disgraceful, humiliating way that Barack treated Hillary.

Most times with woman it is the tender gestures that matter. McCain has demonstrated that he understands that.

@Cycloptichorn,
maybe this will allow McCain to move more towarda the center (where he's always been) and NOT lose the conservative base. Now he has Palin to shore up the far right; he doesn't have to worry about that anymore.

Defeating her in the Democratic primary is disgraceful and humiliating? Good Lord!

That's the only rationale I've heard so far that makes any sense.
