Osso should write a book:
Serendipity Soups
or
Dumpster Diving your Kitchen.
How to make great food from whatever is in your fridge

E: ran two miles before work
S: Buttered bagel, diet Coke

@Joe Nation,
That would be an odd book: Never the Same Soup Twice..

yesterday -

2 coffees/tot 1 tsp sugar

a toasted bun, forget the name, apparently typical to new mexico - sort of like a hoagie bun, but much lighter in character - with olive oil garlic brushed on each half interior face, 1.5 pieces of swiss cheese, four small slices pepperoni (rememember that pizza fest?), baked.

blood orange

pellegrino

another strange soup, so now I have two pots in fridge --

ate two bowls full of:

tub of firm tofu sauteed in canola with a little curry powder, some chile powder, some pepper; bunch of water and chicken broth; 1/2 cup each of bhutan red rice and arborio (approx same cooking times); frozen green beans, chopped half raw onion; a large can of Muir Glen organic whole tomatoes plus juice with the tomatoes scissored up; a third of a jar of water based artichoke heart slices.
Not bad.. you'd have to like artichoke hearts, which I sort of do and sort of don't. A little of the jarred ones goes a long way for me, in contrast to really well prepared whole artichokes in either carciofi giudea (fried whole artichoke that looks like a dried flower and tastes like the world's best potato chips) or roman artichokes or regular old steamed artichokes.

glass of bourbon on ice

pellegrino

@ossobuco,
carciofi alla giudea - when I was served it, it was flipped, sans stem, so it looked like a giant flower. I thought I died and went to heaven, but I was already there (Rome), said as hyperbole.

@ossobuco,
Sorry, a lot of fat of course, probably less with the alla romana, and I never fry stuff at all. But artichoke memories are strong..

@ossobuco,
Oh good, I'm wrong - here is Lidia Bastianich's carciofi alla romana recipe -

http://www.lifestylefood.com.au/recipes/2003/romanstyle-braised-artichokes-carciofi-alla-romana

And I suppose the giudea style, done at the right very hot temperature, doesn't retain much fat. Not a thing I'd ever try at home myself. "Woman burns down neighborhood while frying artichokes".

@Joe Nation,
yesterday -
coffee with 1/2 tsp sugar

about a dozen soda crackers with slivers of brie

warmed granny smith apple torta wedge

small bowl of strange soup numero uno, still tastes good

pellegrino/ice/lemon

(gardening, 1.5 hours)

medium bowl of strange soup numero due; now with the rice more plumped the artichoke taste is not as strong - added some more water before microwaving. But now it needs more tofu to be noticed with the rice, but I'm out of tofu. Still fairly tasty but a tad like a bowl of gruel.

glass white wine
