forteo
Marilee, my osteoporsis dr. did some sort of full xray on me and found no fractures. he then started me on the forteo. I have only had one bone density, after a year on forteo, and it showed improvement. Glad your seeing a specialist, they know so much more. you can email me at [email protected] for easier chatting

Any success with Lumbar?
I have been on Forteo for about 2 years and Evista with it this last year.
My hips have improved greatly but my spine has made minimal improvement with no improvement in my L4(-3). When reaching the 2 year mark with Forteo I have to change. I did not maintain nor improve in the spinal region on Fosamax so am looking at Boniva. Has anyone had significant success with Lumbar improvement?

I was taking Fosamax for two years and experienced swelling of the throat area and great difficulty swallowing...discontinued Fosamax and began taking Forteo. After 5 months of injections pain in my left hip and coccyx area has become extreme. I can not perform daily tasks unless I take 3 advil every 4 hours and that includes waking from pain during sleep. It appears that the pain began and worsened since I begun injecting Forteo. Is anyone experiencing the same pain or similar circumstances?

forteo
Natalie, I have been on forteo for over a year now. Before I started I was in great pain. The pain is now gone and my bones are rebuilding. I only had a few leg cramps when I first started. I did not read anything on pain as a side effect. Better talk to your doctor or talk to the forteo people. They have been very helpful to me.

Hi Maryjane,

I have been on forteo now for a month and I have not had any side effects yet and hopefully I will not have any.

Are you still on forteo and if you are did you have any lasting side effects from it and what will you be taking after you are done with forteo?

I hope to hear from you soon.

I'm just starting Forteo and have concerns about the problem with bone cancer. Is there anyone that has been on the drug for some period of time. Since it's such a new drug, doesn;t seem to be much data. Would appreciate hearing about the experiences others have had with this drug. Thanks Letty-Feb 27, 2005

Hi Letty,

I have been on forteo for a month now and I have not had any side effects yet and hopefully I will not have any. Like you I have my concerns about the risk of bone cancer but they did give rats alot more than any human and I was a very high risk for a fracture and I would not want to break any bones.

How are you doing on it now and have you had any side effects?

I hope to hear from you soon.-Sheila

I am a 38 year old female with severe osteoporosis. My doctor has just recomended Forteo and I will probably start taking the drug in about two weeks. I am interested in participating in any long term studies and am wondering about the Mayo study that was mentioned in this forum. Are any of you involved in clinical trials or studies? Are most of your insurance companies covering the cost of this very expensive drug?

Thanks, Annie

Forteo coverage
Annie,

My ins co covered Forteo under the Major Medical portion, NOT the drug coverage, which is nice. I haven't started to take it yet, and am still trying to decide whether to or not..

After reading these postings, it seems that a lot of folks are trying it.

Does ANYONE know how to research any followup on the study group, since the approval of the drug. Does Forteo have long term effects, or do your bones go back to where they were gradually after the 2 years on the stuff? I'm very curious to see what happens AFTER you stop taking the shots.. I think saw somewhere that a more extensive 10 yr trial was being done, anyone know of this?

I appreciate any information.. I really don't know what to do..

The drug maker required that I go off of it after 2 years. I think it is a regular requirement. There currently is nothing else out there supposedly. I didn't make any progress on Fosamax previously so have switched to once-a-month Boniva. I will have a scan in a year. I am at the bottom of the red with my lumbar and nothing seems to have touched it. With the Forteo, my hips went from the red to almost the green.
I would also appreciate knowing of any trials that specifically address the lumbar region.

Re: overseas trip forteo

My wife has been on forteo since March 2003 with great results (10%) bone increase on annual scan. We have made three overseas trips including river cruises, bus tours and car rental independent travel. Buses, hotels, river boats and B&B's have accomodated refrigeration (sometimes at the bar refrig). We used a freeze gel pack and icebox in the rental car. Get one that plugs into the lighter. All are 12V. On the flight the best solution we found is a wide mouth thermos with ice cubes. It will stay cold more than 24 hrs.

Like "marmot" I travel a lot. I started Forteo a couple of months ago. The shots are painless, and I have experienced no side-effects, but keeping the pen cold when I travel is a major problem.
I am delighted that someone else has tried the wide-mouth thermos solution with success. I made do on a the westward part of complicated trip across the country with a combination of techniques, but it was stressful making sure the temperature stayed in the right range.
The wide-mouth stainless steel thermos I ordered for our return trip should be here in a few days. Some preliminary experiment with a thermometer reassured me that prolonged submersion in water and ice did not actually put the reading down to 0 degrees centigrade, and I suspect that the actual freezing temperature of the Forteo solution may be a bit lower than that of water. I will try to confirm that before we start back in a week on the long and complicated route home. I still have a little concern about whether the pen is water-tight, but have discovered that a 1-quart freezer bag with double walls seems to be, so will encase the Forteo pen in that when I put it in the thermos. I should have time to experiment with temperature range and duration of adequate cold using cracked ice alone vs. ice in water before we leave.
This trip we're on is one with a lot of car travel on either end of the cross-country flight-with-on-connection. The 3-hour travel pack supplied barely lasted from our door to the plane, and would not definitely not last from the door of our vacation home to the airport on this side! If the thermos solution works as well as I hope (and "marmot's" posting is elating) it's clearly the way to go for such complex domestic trips as well as the ones to the other side of the world.
My husband and I travel a LOT, and really need something that will keep my Forteo safe for 24 hours. Lilly customer service currently doesn't offer real help to people like us, and they should start considering the realities of modern life. Not all of us with low bone density stay at home. This fall my husband has a professional trip to Paris and Portugal, and one to China is coming up. I see no need to choose between doing something for my bones and continuing to enjoy such travel with him. Good for you, "marmot"!

I've read the posted travel trips and need to know if others have had success is the wide mouth thermos solution? We are traveling to Europe and need to assure that the drug is good for a 12 -16 hour trip.

In addition, what type of thermometer have you found, and where, to measure the temperature of the drug in the pouch?

Dessiedo and Chris - thanks for your reply - I hadn't thought of trying to run it under major medical. I am in the process of switching from United to BlueCross and am nervous about coverage.

To those who are traveling - has anyone tried some of the insulin cold kits, such as FRIO? And has anyone tried the portable car fridges?

Also - is anyone out there diagnosed with osteoporosis, but free of risk factors (steroid use, eating disorders, alcoholism) or other diseases (hyperparathyroidism, kidney disease, lupus)? I do not have any of the above listed, but have been diagnosed with osteoporosis with no known cause. I have had several blood/urine workups.

I'm glad you all are out there -

Annie

risk factors
The only thing my doctor could figure was genetic. I had none of the risk factors - have always been very athletic and physical. The day I was diagnosed I had chopped wood and made a fire run(was volunteer fire fighter and training officer. chris

Forteo
I am an 79 yr old male who took forteo for only 6 weeks as I had severe osteoporosis, the results are as following, I ended up with Lumbar seteosis w/ nerve irration and Cervical Spondylosis. If I had any idea that any of this would happen I would never had taken the medicine. I could not tolorate Fosamax or Actonel. I am constantly dizzy and have to take Neurourtin for muscle spasms or I couldn't sleep.

Chris,

Are you saying that AFTER you finished your 2 yrs on Forteo, that your bone scans are showing decline in the bones again?

I understand that Forteo 'rebuilds' bones for people with low PTH (parathyroid hormone), and no one can tell me what will happen AFTER the 2 yrs and you STILL have no PTH to rebuild.. Will your bones go back to 'prior' Forteo condition, and how long will that take. The FDA required Lily to do a 10 yrs study, but can't find any info on THAT..

I have no tolerance for Fosomax, Actonel, etc, with digestion problems, so assume Boniva is the same. I understand that these slow down the destruction of bone, so work differently. My Dr said that they'd be little help to someone with low or no PTH level.. as the bone 'building' is what is missing. This MAY buy me time for science to come up with something more long term..

I have till Tues to make my decision of taking it or not. I may start, and keep watch, and decide to quit at a future time. Still not sure about risks.

Thanks for all of your information, you've been helpful.

No, after 2 years on Fosomax my bones showed a decline. After 2 years on Forteo, my hips showed a remarkable increase but my lumbar area of my spine showed "no change."
I had some "funny feelings" my first week on Forteo then felt fine after that. My doctor also had me on Evista the second year.
You might want to "google" osteoporosis and set up that you aren't sent an email about any new info on the web. It has been my experience that I have to vigorously pursue answers as the doctor just doesn't have time.
