That .338 is a necked up .308, not a .338WM.

The .338WM and .30-06 are longer than most assault rifles are designed to chamber, so making one that could chamber them would be harder than simply slapping on an appropriate caliber barrel.

But the Browning BAR can chamber them in a semi-auto design, and hypothetically could be extensively modified into an assault rifle-like design.

Assault rifles fire a mid-size cartridge - re: M4, AK47 etc ...
I don't think the 1918 BAR could ever be trimmed down to an assault rifle configuration ...

The M14 is a better option, but you are still dealing with a main battle rifle firing a full size cartridge.

You are correct on the .338, my bad, but the .30-06 is available in some models and was actually submitted in a design by Cobb (www.cobb50.com) to the U.S. Military not long ago.

That's the wrong BAR.

Browning made two guns with the same name.

And to think, Obama doesn't oppose the magazine size of any of those guns.

What's a gun nut to do? Other than pretend otherwise?

I knew of the rifle linked, but thought you were talking about a military style rifle.

Thanks for the link.

Wrong again. He wants to limit them to half their standard size.

This page (requires Java) will relay a live (text) report from the Supreme Court as it hands down today's (Thursday June 19) rulings -- including timely links to the rulings themselves.

http://www.coveritlive.com/index.php?option=com_altcaster&task=siteviewaltcast&altcast_code=82608e8aa0

The website's reporting goes live at 9:45 AM eastern time.

The Supreme Court begins giving the morning's rulings at 10:00 AM eastern time.

The Java applet updates the reporting automatically -- no need to refresh browsers.

No guarantees that Heller will come today, but if it does, this will be the first place to relay the news, and the first to link the ruling.

(Chances are good that it will be either Heller or the ruling on whether pedophiles can receive the death penalty -- but no idea which.)

Cool

If I may back up a bit, Hornady has just introduced new, shorter versions of the 300 and 338WM that will operate in EBR's. The line is called RCM, short for Ruger Compact Magnum.

So, soon after we get settled in at work tomorrow, we'll know if we still have a complete and untarnished Bill or Rights, or whether a body of people living today (the court) has neutralized a right given to us by the Founders. If the Constitution isn't worth defending, I don't know what is.

Strong signals out of the Supreme Court that Scalia is writing the majority opinion in Heller.

The Court has released the opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller (07-290), on whether the District's firearms regulations - which bar the possession of handguns and require shotguns and rifles to be kept disassembled or under trigger lock - violate the Second Amendment. The ruling below, which struck down the provisions in question, is affirmed.

It is also quite apparent that Ginsberg, Souter, and Stevens - have got to go.
