Thomas, have you got winter tires on the car?

Nope. Another reason I'm tending towards the train.

I'll go to the microbrewery to meditate now. When I come back, I'll know if I'll buy a train ticket or not. But I'll probably will.

If you're not a wildly experienced "winter storm warning" driver, and don't have winter tires, I wouldn't recommend a 5 - 7 hour Friday night practice drive. There will be too many people out there who you can assume don't know how to drive in those conditions. You don't want to get to know them any better.

Trains can be a fine alternative.

Oh, and if mapquest says 4.5 hours, you have to consider it's Friday. Driving to NY/NJ from Boston, or vice-versa, you're going to get killed with traffic. CT is awful.

I went to NYC a while ago, and made it in just 4.5 hours or so, but left early afternoon on a Friday(still hit traffic in CT to NY). I've had to make that drive later in the day, and it was easily 6hrs.

Moral of the story: train will probably be quicker on a Friday.

Do they have bar service on the trains there?

last time there was snow and i was in new york, i got stranded - no buses were running and trains were godawfully delayed and sold out. i had to wait till 4am to get on one....

i would take a car...public transportation in this country sucks when you most need it. when it snowed in boston, the buses just stopped running. no announcement or anything. nada. they just don't come. funny.

Dasha's warning not withstanding, I tend to agree that taking the train is a fine alternative. Especially if you buy the tickets before the snow starts. I like the train ride between here and dc - most of it....

Train ticket booked. The Amtrak even thanked me for choosing it. So nice! I'm sure it would never let me down in a snow storm.

And, yes Beth, there are often bar cars.

...that's what my boss thought...he took a train not 4 days ago, so that he's surely on time - it's safer than car or a bus, right?.... wrong, he was 2 hours late for a crucial lunch with a hedge fund president or something.

but i'm sure you'll be fine. i'll shut up now.

Sister is in Germany (for now -- she's applying for a job in New Jersey). I didn't yet think of inviting best friend, but it sounds like a nice idea! I'll ask her tomorrow. Thanks!
