Interesting dismissal in the game.
Malinga hits the ball to Symonds at short extra cover. The batsmen set off for a quick single.
malinga has almost made his ground when symonds, with his back to the pitch takes the ball and underhands it 10/15 m back to the bowlers end stumps. malinga grounds his bat at full stretch. The bat jags ion the pitch and dragged from malingas hand. The ball hits the stumps as mailinga crosses the crease, his foot has not yet made contact with the pitch behind the crease.
Was he out?
LAW 38 RUN OUT
1. Out Run out
(a) Either batsman is out Run out, except as in 2 below, if at any
time while the ball is in play
(i) he is out of his ground
and (ii) his wicket is fairly put down by the opposing side.
(b) (a) above shall apply even though No ball has been called
and whether or not a run is being attempted, except in the
circumstances of Law 39.3(b) (Not out Stumped).
2. Batsman not Run out
Notwithstanding 1 above, a batsman is not out Run out if
(a) he has been within his ground and has subsequently left it to
avoid injury, when the wicket is put down.
Since he didn't leave his ground to prevent injury, then he is run out.
