@Roberta,

Other problems arose at the hospital which are being addressed (endocrinology). My 'ums are all dangerously low. (Potassium, magnesium, calcium.) This came up during both hospital stays, and huge amounts of the stuff was pumped into me. I told the docs that the same thing happened the last time I had radiation.

I was looking for something else and found the DASH diet, which among its pros ...

GET THOSE NUTRIENTS The DASH eating plan is rich in various nutrients believed to benefit blood pressure and in other factors involved in good health. The amounts of the nutrients vary by how much you eat. If you eat about 2,000 calories a day on the plan, the nutrients you get will include:

* 4,700 milligrams of potassium
* 500 milligrams of magnesium
* 1,240 milligrams of calcium

Those totals are about two to three times the amounts most Americans get.

@ehBeth,
I might be able to eat the stuff on the diet in a month or so. Maybe six weeks. Don't know if the problem will exist once the radiation is over.

Thanks for investigating, Beth.

Gotta be less zaps now, yes?

@dlowan,
Not sure I understand the question, Deb. I get zapped five days a week. Even if the doses are smaller (and I don't think they are), the side effects are still the same.

@Roberta,
Still, a bit closer to the finish line, though.

@roger,
Less than two weeks of zaps left, I hope.

@ehBeth,
Seven zaps, I think.

We need to be planning a birthday thread.

@ossobuco,
Yep, osso. Seven zaps remaining.

I was told at the outset that radiation to the larynx would be horrible--one of the most difficult of all the radiation treatments. No one tried to minimize the effects. I knew what to expect. Still you can't be totally prepared for how truly awful this is.

Increasing pain with every swallow. Also gagging, choking, and retching. Unable to eat hot or cold, any spice except for a little salt, meat (beef, pork, lamb, veal), any citrus in any form, most bread, veggies (other than pureed), any carbonated drink. I also can't swallow most pills. I grind them up and put them in something--pudding, apple sauce, whatever.

It hurts to talk, which is just as well because I've become almost inaudible. Sometimes nothing but a squeak comes out.

I was told that I would lose a lot of weight. So far 14 pounds. Not as much as expected. I attribute that to being in the hospital for 13 days. Hospitals have "soft" menus, so I ate more in the hospital than I do at home.

Don't know how long it will take for the effects to wear off. I look forward to swallowing without tears welling up in my eyes. I look forward to a Pepsi and an egg cream. I look forward to meat.

@Roberta,
The only thing to be said about all that is damn....and thank heavens it will be over sooner rather than later.

I only meant less zaps to go through, not that the zaps would be less in themselves, by the way.

Is there any advice on how long it takes for your poor throat to settle?
