Your conclusion is a little too stark. Mr Harris thought the activity, which he wasn't in the least hung up about, was debilitating to a certain extent and left a young man somewhat short of his peak.
Height is controlled by many factors. I fear if this activity under discussion led to loss of height most men would fit easily into a thimble.
