Is there any reason to care what Harold Bloom thinks about this? His expertise is literature, and he probably ought not try to extend himself much outside that sphere of knowledge.

One thing is certain, he is an annoying, pompous ass.

And Mr Bush's area of expertise is.......

what is it, anyway?

Well Tico if Bloom is a pompus ass and you have no respect for his opinions, whose opinions do you have respect for?

...

When Bloom is speaking about literature he is speaking as a specialist on his own subject, but when he starts talking politics, he's an amateur. Therefore, I find it sensible to attend to him respect in the one case and not in the other ... and so I do.

Yes, Bush is the president, but with one of the lowest ratings for any president. Don't look for any improvement during his last year in office.

Bush is ranked with the worst presidents in the history of the US: Nixon, Harding, Hoover, Buchanan, Coolidge, Andrew Johnson, Grant, and McKinley.

C I
I beg to submit this.
None of the participants in this forum can compete with my Anti_bush stand. Many Abuzzers know me as a fanatic Anti-bush.
Now I am extremely sorry that he has to leave from the limelight after this election.
The whole world will miss the best joker or a laughing stock who had exposed the american dream.
As a rationalist I think that he had made the succesor's life very hard.
God Bless Bush and save the American from his world outlook.
Amen

From Rolling Stone:

Now, though, George W. Bush is in serious contention for the title of worst ever. In early 2004, an informal survey of 415 historians conducted by the nonpartisan History News Network found that eighty-one percent considered the Bush administration a "failure." Among those who called Bush a success, many gave the president high marks only for his ability to mobilize public support and get Congress to go along with what one historian called the administration's "pursuit of disastrous policies." In fact, roughly one in ten of those who called Bush a success was being facetious, rating him only as the best president since Bill Clinton -- a category in which Bush is the only contestant.

Look at the rankings listed on this Wikipedia page and tell me what you think of them. ----> LINK

They rank Billy Boy ahead of Bush 43 .... just ahead of him.

Quote:
... Democratic-leaning scholars rated George W. Bush the sixth-worst president of all time, while Republican scholars rated him the sixth-best, giving President George W. Bush a split-decision rating of "average".

Shocker!

Damn, buddy. I mean, how can you in good conscience say that those categorizing Bush as a bad president are somehow "losers", and "Democrat leaning"? There are many conservative republicans who have expressed their belief that Bush has been a disaster, and has perverted conservative values.

Are you going to stick your head in the sand and pretend this isn't true?

Are you going to pretend you've never heard this, and demand I produce sources ( and then still deny it)?

I wouldn't rank Bush that high on some points, thats for sure, but I would on others. I just made a sarcastic comment about scholars being biased, which I am sure they are. Snood, you don't need to produce proof, I believe you on the Republicans ranking Bush. With all of that said, I think the true ranking of Bush should wait a few years or alot of years to be accurate, after all, Abe Lincoln was not very popular in his day and now he is at the top of the list. Bush is no Lincoln, don't get me wrong, but I think he is considerably better than he is given credit for right now.

It's hard to measure him against long dead presidents but he is clearly one of the stupidest men alive today. He is thick as a post. He was an abject failure as governor, a failure as a businessman, a hypocrite and a liar.

If that doesn't put him at the bottom of the list then the USA has had some really dillies for presidents. Reagan was one. Why do conservatives always seem to vote in idiots?

And exactly what credit should we give Bush?

For restoring a couple of judges to the Supreme Court that will not make up law. For placing terrorists on the run, improving morale in the military, improving homeland security with the Patriot Act, and presiding over a fairly decent economy, which could have been far worse following 9/11. He tried other good things, such as reforming social security, but the Democrats roadblocked him. He wanted to improve energy production, but the Dems block him.

He flunks on immigration and he flunks for not controlling domestic spending and for starting more entitlements such as the prescription drug program.

That is just a few observations. I would be interested in Ticomayas evaluation. I am not interested in JTT's in the least.

Oh, one last important one, he restored respect to the Whitehouse and ended the orgies. At least there have been adults living there during his administration. And he has appointed respectable people that actually love the country.
