I also found The Exorcist terrifying.
A long time ago, I saw a dark horror film involving dead, blind shrouded beings. You could not see their faces or their bodies, as they wore hooded robes. What made them so terrifying was that, though they were blind, they could hear everything, even the sound of a fearful pounding heart beating. The movie was set at night, of course, and had no background sound at all. The silence was a huge part of the film. Thinking about it still gets my heart pounding. That silence.
Sorry I don't remember the name, wish I could.
Thanks for the correction on the Hurt character, LW (pun intentional).
what do you guys think of the movie "IT"
ooh. . . IT scares me. I have a clown thing, however. . .
The Ring is the scariest movie I've seen in awhile. . .
Loved the US version of Ringu, but the Japanese trilogy is by far better!
If it's anywhere near as scary as the Ring was, I doubt I can take it. . . I thought the music was well done in Ring, as was the cinematography. . . I have to agree that the topic is a little hokey, which is what makes the fact that it is so scary all the more impressive.
Ring was sort of semi psycological thriller with American made gross-out included. Ringu, Ringu Ni, and Ringu Sen are more :
1) Psychological Ghost Story
2) SF/Ghost Story
3) Metaphysical Psychological Drama
psychological thrillers are usually the best, it seems. . . you're right that the American gross-out factor gets in the way (speaking of Stephen King. . .)
I
LOATHE Stephen King. Dan Simmons did a book that took the "it" premise much furhter with much more shiver-facotor, and has brought the charaters in that book back in most of his subsequent horror genre works.
Summer of Night
There's a thing about King I've never understood, and that's mostly his. . . hmm. . . need to kill off as many characters as possible with no plot necessity. I remember, hmm, the dog book. . . Cudjo, or Kujo, or whatever it was, and the boy dying at the end. Why? that's not scary. . .
His books left me sad, not scared. . . I think he's manipulative and rather uncreative. . .
I just finished watching 28 days a few mins ago, great movie. Among the best of the modern 'horror' movies.
I can see it being political, the quarantine and everything.
How depressing it was though....so good.
yeah. . . 28 Days was very good. . . but about at the soldiers sitting at dinner scene, it hit me "this is a human nature story". . . dunno if I liked it that blunt :-)
Anyone here ever see "CUBE" ?
A psychological thriller, intense and unnerving, especially if you're a bit claustrophobic.
Yes, I've seen "CUBE" and thought it provocative and inventive but in the end rather too ambiguous.
It makes "2001" seem extraordinarily clear!
I haven't seen CUBE but anything that could make 2001 seem clear and understandavle must be arcane, indeed!
I think we're just very conditioned to expect an "ending" ending, at least some resolution.
CUBE leaves the resolution wide open, which does make for some amazing post-viewing discussions.
Does anyone know the title of a movie that came out in the 1987-88ish timeframe, about a priest who is sent to a parish in New Orleans that is haunted by a succubus? While there he encounters a young blonde street girl who is being pursued by a coven, Near the end the priest has an encounter with the succubus who is in alternate shots a hot, lissome redhead in sheer red silk and a gruesome green lizardy thing. The movie was pretty bad, but I would love the chance to see it again and laugh at it.
Hey, I've heard a lot about Cube, actually. . . is it available in the US? I've never seen it, or seen it advertised. . . but I'm interested in seeing it. . .
You can buy it at Amazon for $15.
doh. . . ok, I SO misstyped that when I searched the first time. . . thanks, angie :-)
