Olga, I had no idea that Flattie got his name that way. Good thing you don't live in the US. He'd be called Apartment.

Laughing Doesn't have quite the same ring to it, does it Roberta? Laughing Actually, I never liked the name much ... it just stuck! Personally, I think he's more of a Max, Bob, Errol or Felix! Very Happy

Ah, Joe you've asked the biggest Luddite at A2K a perfectly simple question she can't answer! Embarrassed I tried myself, received lots of help from other kind souls, but failed dismally! Embarrassed In the end margo had to do it for me. Duh ....
There's a turorial you can follow, or maybe some kind person can assist you? I wish I could help. I'd love to see you're cat!
Good luck!

Yes, they ARE beautiful .... but then, so are tabbies, grey cats, black cats, white cats, Burmese, rag doll cats, etc., etc .... It's amazing how ALL of them manage to be so fetching, yes? Laughing

yes Very Happy

I think Rosie has the most sense of humour of any cat I've met. She just loves to run rings around people and i swear she's laughing.

When himself tries to get her in at night she dances around him, patting his ankles from behind and then dancing out of reach ....

At last a good news story in the morning paper! Very Happy Aladdin Sisalem, the last "resident" of Manus Island, was finally freed from detention yesterday. He had fled Kuwait in 2000 as an asylum seeker to Australia, but was refused by the Australian government & locked up at Manus island instead. For 10 months he was the sole detainee at the detention centre & during that time he befriended Honey, a stray cat. Read on:

While glad to be out of Manus Island, there was one thing he was reluctant to leave behind - Honey, a stray cat that helped him ward off loneliness.

Arrangements for the cat to accompany him were reportedly frustrated by the Immigration Department not completing the paperwork in time.

Mr Sisalem said of the cat: "She was the only company I had since I was left alone in detention 10 months ago."

Well guess what? Honey is now in Oz! There she was, on the evening news, reunited with her friend, Aladdin Sisalem. A nice looking critter, with rather a scratched up nose! Very Happy She looked very happy & he looked very happy, too. Very Happy Now she has some time in quarantine, before becoming a free cat!

Outreached PAW
Today, I am reminded how I got my calico girl over 8 years ago.

I saw a calico racing in and out of traffic near the busiest intersection in town. I saw from a distance and was on pins and needles praying she would get across safely--she didn't. She was hit.

She managed to get herself back to safety and huddled near a building. I stopped my vehicle in the parking lot to help her.

I called to her softly, "Here Kitty."

She was hurt and terrified.

I used a cell phone, called the animal warden, asked him to come and get her. He was there immediately and took her to the pound.

I went to the pound exactly three days later to check on her. Her owner had not claimed her. She had not received any medical care. She was about an hour away from getting the needle.

I spoke softly to her and she dragged her injured body from the back of the cage to the front and stuck her paw out to me.

How could I walk away? I couldn't.

I adopted her. I ordered medical care. X-rays showed that her hind leg was shattered. The vet said it was possible to save the leg--but it could be an exercise in futility. The vet recommended amputation.

I decided that amputation was too drastic--that we should first try to save the leg.

I think I made the right decision. She had surgery on her shattered leg and healed wonderfully. And she gave me a litter of kittens. Wow. I guess getting hit on the street wasn't the only thing that happened in her life before I met her.

I found good homes for all of her babies.

She's my special girl--we've been together for 8 years (she was estimated to be about a year old when I adopted her). She was only 5 pounds when she first came to live with me--she's now a roly-poly 12 pounds.

She's SMART. She knows her name--she knows a lot of words. (She hates the word, "bath." As soon as she hears that word, she disappears.) I don't know her language, but she's quite talkative and somehow lets me know what she needs or wants. I know she likes her food bowl FULL--if it gets low--she chews me out until I follow her out to the kitchen and fill her bowl to the top.

I should probably limit her food intake for her own good because she's getting very round--but she doesn't ask for much and I hate to deprive her of this pleasure.

I don't think a day goes by when she doesn't show me in her sweet, unselfish, gentle manner how thankful she is to be alive.

For her former owner who didn't bother to go looking for her at the pound 8 years ago, you lost a treasure--and she's mine, but not mine alone. I share her with my honey. He loves HER just as much as I do.

Oh, what a lucky cat you have there, Debra! And what a stroke of luck for you, too! Very Happy I agree - cats in need, like yours, somehow "know" that you've done something wonderful for them. You'll have a loyal friend for as long as she lives. I've had similar responses from "rescued" cats. ALL of them became special in there own ways & they were so devoted!
What a wonderful story!
(BTW what's her name?)

Debra, Thanks for sharing that. I'm glad the two of you ended up together.

Olga, Not every rescued cat is grateful. Does Mikey seem grateful to you? He certainly doesn't to me. But I love him anyway. Many people have told me that he's lucky to have ended up with me. Most other people wouldn't tolerate his behavior. I have infinite patience for animals and old people--and precious little for anybody else.

(This is a repeat post, Roberta ... the one I sent a minute ago vanished into thin air!)

Of course Mikey appreciates you! Who else, in the whole of NYC, would allow him to be his true, unrestrained self? (Mikey unplugged!) No one else, that's who, Roberta! And I'm sure, deep down in his furry, naughty little soul he knows this & is as grateful as grateful can be.!

I'm a sappy, optimist. Without any thought at all, I immediately named her "Pollyanna" after the positive little girl in the children's story (she broke her leg too). Since we didn't know if we could save the leg, I thought we had to think "positive" and hence, "Pollyanna."

My next visit, I will have to tell the story about my other girl, Tabitha (of course, a tabby cat). Not an original name, but she "bewitched" me the moment I held her....

hit by car
In the children's story, Pollyanna, the little girl was hit by a car. I was thinking her leg was broken, but I think she was paralyzed . . . .

"It was on the last day of October that the accident occurred. Pollyanna, hurrying home from school, crossed the road at an apparently safe distance in front of a swiftly approaching motor car.

Just what happened, no one could seem to tell afterward. Neither was there any one found who could tell why it happened or who was to blame that it did happen. Pollyanna, however, at five o'clock, was borne, limp and unconscious, into the little room that was so dear to her. . . ."

Anyhoo....My special girl, Pollyanna the Cat, is my daily reminder to think positive and love life.

Debra

She obviously IS very special to you.
Does she get called Polly, for short? Just curious, as I had a Polly that lived to the ripe old age of 23! I hope your Pollyanna does, too!
