I can't remember if I said before I went away - but I loved the Mikey poem. Smile

I've been to deliver my work to a gallery (on Thursda, 29 pieces from 6ins square to 5ft - the car was loaded to the gunwhales!) and then stay over with my daughter 40 miles away to go to the Private View last night and home today.

Her cat is gorgeous, she's ginger, plump, short legged and short tailed with a little broad face and a very very loving nature - she wants to be stroked and talked to constantly and chatters away to you - Paddy be warned I could do a swap! Twisted Evil She will NOT be picked up though.

I talked to Rosie on the phone and she gets all excited.

Loved the cartoons,

The students living across the street have got a kitten. I know, because I can watch the little one taking a sunbath on the window sill- 3 floors up.
The other day when my husband left for work he heard a miserable meow. He first was afraid that our cat had dashed out, but the meow came from across the street. He spotted the cat on the canopy of the fashion boutique. It had fallen from the third floor. He fetched a ladder, picked up the animal , and brought it back.
Today the little one is in the sun again- behind a screen.

msolga, That could definitely be yours truly. But Mikey is NOT afraid of mice. He's just not good at holding onto them. He'll give a good chase. He'll even catch one. But then he lets it go. Yup, I'm standing on something the whole time, shouting, "Kill, kill." Oy, this discussion is making me noivous.

Vivien, Glad you liked the poem, and good luck with the show and the paintings. I don't believe you'd trade cats. Just talking a good game.

Ul, Glad the folks across the street got screens. And hats off to your SO for the rescue.

Mikey and I aren't speaking at the moment. Yes, again! Rolling Eyes I love him love him, love him. And then he does something BAD. Evil or Very Mad I still love him, but I get mad and punish him by ignoring him. He hates that. Smile

Rosie was punishing me by ignoring me - for daring to go away for a couple of days - and what's worse - come back smelling of another cat - she checked everything out! we're friends again.

Are all cats happy now? Rosie is- what about Mikey?

Kiki is right now my family- all other members are gone. He is not too happy about it. He misses sleeping in my son's bed.

Ul, Is that you? I didn't recognize your avatar. I thought you were another Ul. It's good to see you here. Very good.

Mikey and I are on good terms again. It won't last. It never does. Glad Kiki is there to keep you company. And maybe even keep your toes toasty now that the weather is cool.

Mikey has taken to sleeping up near my head after years of hanging out at the foot of the bed in the summer and under the covers in the winter.

Vivien, My late lamented Miranda used to punish me when I got back from a trip. She was like a sundial/compass. Wherever I was, her back would be toward me. This never lasted.

I was away from Mikey twice in our 12 years together. Once when my mother broke her shoulder. I went home with her from the hospital and stayed a few days. He wasn't mad when I got back. The second time was earlier this year when I was in the hospital. The friends who came and went from my apartment (to feed him, bring me things, etc.) never saw him. They knew he was here because his food was eaten and the litter was used.

When I got home, I was so glad to see him that I don't remember what his reaction was to me. In fact, I missed him so much that whenever I thought about him or someone mentioned him to my while I was in the hospital, I would start blubbering. A friend arrived for a visit, saw me crying and said, "Mikey?" I nodded.

I love the compass/sundial description! it describes it exactly Very Happy

I can imagine how much you missed and worried about Mikey. He must have been delighted to see you home again.

After my daughter's super loving cat, I realise what a dictatorial little madam Rosie is! why do I put up with it? ah well, when she's all melty and loving I remember.

She was worried sick when I was packing all the paintings up for the show - there were about 3 dozen, lots about 18in /24in size and some up to 60in. It's a horrible lengthy job packing and labelling so I started a couple of days before and had them in bags, bubble wrapped, piled up in the living room (it really added to the decor!) - she thought we were packing to go away and at first kept running away every time I went near her, in case I was going to pop her into her travelling box and take her up to my parents! She calmed down after about 12 hours and realised that all was well.

Paddy of course took it all in his stride and calmly got on with the business of eating, sleeping and disappearing for hours on end.

Just finished reading a book by Cleveland Amory about his first cat. He refers to people with cats as "cat-owned." He's right. That's why we put up with it. They've got us hook, line, and sinker--and they know it.

I have no basis to back up my theory, but I think that female cats are far more demanding and bossy than the males. Mikey is nuts, but not bossy. Nuts, but not all that demanding. Nuts, but not especially temperamental.

Vivien, how did your show go?

the private view was a real buzz Roberta and some sales right at the beginning which was great, more the next day - the gallery owner is delighted. It's on for a month so fingers tightly crossed for more sales.

My daughter and her partner came with me (they live 40 miles away so I stayed there for a couple of days, which was great). They popped to the pub across the road for part of the evening as I thought they'd be bored staying all night. By the end of the evening daughter's partner and gallery owner were very very happy and tipsy - gallery owner said next day she was so tired she'd fallen asleep on the settee <mmmmm tired? ok!> I was the driver so was on elderflower non-alcoholic drinks.

She'd done the private view brilliantly with nice food and wine and a live group, which made it more of a party. She's a good saleswoman too - I heard a guest who was looking at one of my paintings being told 'well it will definitely go quickly' to hurry up her decision! That's what I need Very Happy

post exhibition blues now - so I must get started on the next one. There's always a down reaction to a high for me I find.

You are quite right about cats owning us. You may be right about the male/female characteristics. Timmy didn't dictate in quite the same way as Rosie. When she's snuggled up and I take a phone call or laugh at a comedy show she flicks her tail to tell me to stop and her language when she doesn't like something has to be heard to be believed!

Roberta- it is me- tweeed, tweed.
This bird was in our apartment some weeks ago.
Luckily Kiki was fast asleep.

Vivien,
seems your show is going well.

Got a nice book today: A cat as black as the night.
I am going to read it with Kiki.

I was about to turn off my computer, but I'd thought I'd drop in here first. I've got tons of work and not enough time for the monster cat. He's whining. Don't blame him, but hey Mikey, I gotta oin a living.

Vivien, glad the show went well.

Olga, So how's by you?

Ul, that bird really flew into your house? How'd you get it out? You don't have screens on all the windows? How do you keep Kiki in? When I adopted Miranda from the ASPCA, I had to sign a paper stating that I would have screens on all the windows. I guess too many apartment cats fall out.

That reminds me. When I adopted sweet little Patty from an organization called Save Our Strays, I had to sign a paper saying that I would not have Patty declawed. Not a problem.

Mikey is whining, so is Kiki. I am spending too much time at my desk grading school books/tests. He tries to sit in the middle of the copy books and is angry when I send him away.Maybe I should change my working hours to his sleeping pattern- no.

Roberta,
yes, this bird flew in when the balcony doors were wide open. It sat on my ficcus tree in the livingroom when I heard it. Kiki slept in my son's room. I closed all the doors leading into the livingroom, opened all windows- including the upper ones. The bird found his way out.
I don't have screens on all windows, we cat proofed the balconies. I have high ceilings and high windows- for airing we use the upper ones-Kiki can't reach them.
Declawing- never.

It's so much fun reading all your kitty stories! I can't believe I hadn't thought to look for a kitty thread before now.

I have two, Sticky and Rufus. Sticky is a little female grey tabby and Rufus is a great big piebald (white w/ orange tabby spots) male. They are such a ridiculous pair! They snuggle and bathe each other, and then the bathing gradually gets more and more irritable, until it finally turns into a full-on wrestling match that spans the whole house. I also have two rabbits that live in the house with all of us and like to join in the fun, chasing the cats and each other around. It's quite a zoo!

Hi cyphercat! Welcome to A2K and the Cat Room. Very Happy

Here's an interesting little article about cats called, "Are asthmatic cats allergic to humans?"

It puts the shoe on the other foot for those who are allergic to cats.
