My experience with acquiring a second cat so the senior cat would have company was alienation of affection. Spooky used to give me a genuine hug (no kidding) when I got home. After I got Nermal, I'm lucky if he gets out of bed. At least Spooky did become the responsible older cat. It almost seems as if there is some rule that allows only one destructive clown per household.

I think I'd be relieved if my one remaining cat became a little more independent. Right now I can barely move around my little house without almost stepping on him. VERY dependent! I feel quite guilty every time I leave the house & leave him alone. <sigh> I hope this is just a passing phase.

Sozobe -- That is so sad. I'm sure you've lived with your dad long enough that you know best not to complain, but oh, how awful for you! Such a darling kitty. At least we're here to commiserate with you. We love our kitties, the ones who are with us and the ones who are gone. Goodbye, pretty Jasmine.

Aw, you guys. Really does make me feel better.

roger, that's so sweet about the hug!

Cats are complicated creatures, aren't they...

I'm so sorry, soz.

I know people who think like your father. Somehow they believe death has more dignity without pharmaceutical intervention. (As for me & mine, give me drugs!!!)

At least Darling Jasmine is at peace now. What a beautiful kitten she was. Hope you feel a little better soon. I know how hard it is to lose one...

soz,
i am so sorry to hear this. a pet is a valued member of any familly.

they add live and love.

it may be too soon to consider another cat, but take it from me, a new pet is like a shot in the arm, not a replacement, but a distratctin that grows into love.

Ok you cat lovers, to more pressing topics now. My neighbors cat has taken a fancy to the boot of my car and I almost always find her napping there.

Short of shooting it with an airgun, what is the best way to discourage her from doing this ? I am afraid that the talons might scratch the paintwork.

Oh, just paint a bulldog on the boot. Works every time.

you could try what someone suggested about cats scratching furniture and spray it with perfume? cats hate strong smells like perfume - and just think of the neighbours watching you do it Shocked !

Yes, Super G
It shows that you are not the cat-hating monster we are led to believe!

At least one cat likes you, or rather your car. We'll even considering talking to you again, now that you have the imprimatur from a cat!

This is the time to be grateful you didn't get that new car - you'd be even more anxious of scratch marks!

Yes, what margo said!

And G, they're not mere scratch marks, they're marks of affection & contentment!

Gautam, is your car parked in sunshide or shade (ah, wait, is there sunshine in London?)

Last evening I threw a rolled up newspaper as I walked towards my car at the bloody cat (more out of the fear of damaging my car than the cat)!!! she beat a hasty retreat.

Let's see what happens today - if she is still there then more extreme measures have to be taken.

That's what Mr. P says. <shudder> It sounds so awful. Mr.P has become fond of Stripe. He calls him "Old Man." Still won't let him in his lap though.

Guatam, that cat is not likely to scratch the paint, UNLESS you throw something at it and it has to beat a hasty retreat, in which case it may inadvertently scratch, trying to get some purchase on that lovely smooth finish. Y'know, it has probably been lying on your car all along... you've just noticed it! LOL

(btw -- Those are not TALONS, those are delicate claws.)
