One thing about this forced inactivity, I am able to concentrate better on turning out a novel. This particular book is still slow growing, but it has picked up a tad of speed. No other project of my lifetime has taken this much time and effort. I hope to get it done while I am young enough to turn to other writing endeavors.

The Alfred Hitchcock Presents story last night is a favorite of mine. Robert Morley is a member of a diner's club. His entire being seems focused on being there when the house specialty is served.

If I were superstitious or religious, even, I might suspect I was being targeted. Consider this quick succession of unfortunate happenings.
1. Both vehicles wrecked
2. Car I bought in need of serious repair
3. Boss cuts my work hours by more than half.
4. Wife gets sore knee, loses much work, goes to doctor, may or may not be able to work in near future.
5. Yesterday's storm killed my router and my wife's computer.
I must say out front, I do not believe in luck, karma, the preordained, or gods. It's just what happens as a matter of course. All I can do is to keep an even keel and work my way through these Lemony Snickett events. (But it sucks)

@edgarblythe,
It really sucks when so many things can go wrong in sequence as you have experienced. I hope you followed your own advise about having a mechanic check out the car before you bought it.

@spendius,
Fortunately, I don't have to answer that. I leave it to his believers to provide any information beyond what I said.

Oh. Add to my list:
Coffee pot conked out. In fact, that's the one made me upset.

Half a day of work tired me out. I was repairing sidewalks. More of same tomorrow.

Holy crap. My neighbor just pointed out that the power surge that killed my router and mrs edgarblythe's computer was the result of lightning striking a tree, towering less than twenty feet from where I was sitting. It left a streak to about roof level. I am just learning of similar losses by some of the neighbors - TVs, computers - It overpowered surge protectors.

@edgarblythe,
You need a surge protector; it's worth every penny!

@cicerone imposter,
We have them, but - The surge protector was not enough to save the computer.

@edgarblythe,
This "form" may be of some help. Even "home insurance" might cover it.

The cold front stalled, but we are still due cool air at last on this day. I am ready for it, although I have come to prefer a little warmth over freezing weather in my old age. The last few winters have been pretty mild.

The picture is dim, but the lightning streak is easily seen. I was about fifteen feet away from the actual strike, sitting at my computer.

Watching the debt limit struggle, I feel somewhat like Alice must have felt as she tumbled down the rabbit hole.
