@spendius,
I have too much respect for animals to do that to them.
@edgarblythe,
I agree ed. It is a bit grisly. But it is hard to make money these days while having principles.
Next time I catch a squirrel I will see if I can rip its throat out. If I can, all bets are off.
@edgarblythe,
Tastes jes' like chicken, Ed!
@Ragman,
I had squirrel many years ago. Can't recall the taste. - It's one thing to have it served to you and quite another to hunt it down and kill it first.
I worked for a man from Kentucky one time. He smoked Mary J and possibly did other recreational things to his body too. One evening he had me over for barbecue. Turns out, he had a squirrel on the pit. "You have to keep the heat real low," he said, his words and body in slow motion. In fact he remained on slow motion all evening. Hours later, when I had to go, the squirrel still lay on the pit, barely lukewarm.
@edgarblythe,
It actually DOES taste like chicken...but there's virtually no fat on the little buggers..so you can't overcook at all or it's rooned!
'The only mini-wildlife that I've enjoyed was rabbit. That's good eatin'
I have enjoyed rabbit, wild and domestic. It's all in the cooking with those wascawwy wabbits.
Another beautiful day in the seventies waits in the wings. I prepare to greet it with the first beams of sunlight. Still lots to get finished before I can turn to new projects.
I was with a friend one day as the friend slaughtered about six rabbits. The last ones to go actually screamed as they watched their companions die. Another friend fried them up and they were delicious. Such memories plague me from time to time.
@edgarblythe,
This is one of the main reasons that I'm no hunter. If my survival teetered on my hunting I would do it for sure. As long as there are markets to buy food, I'll keep on keeping on.
@Ragman,
I would certainly eat more vegetables and less meat.
@edgarblythe,
My brother in law has heart problems, but with lifestyle changes in his diet and regular exercise is off all meds. While in Honolulu this past week, the shortest distance we've walked is six miles in a day.
I'll be flying home today.
@edgarblythe,
That's what I've done for the last 25 or so years. Of the critters-with-a-face group, I eat chicken and fish but rarely eat any red meat. Maybe once per year I might have some beef at a BBQ. however, if it came to pulling the trigger or being the executioner, I'd eat none. Fishing I can handle.
@Ragman,
I still eat red meat. I believe essentially that a person should eat as great a variety of food as possible, after considering health issues.
@cicerone imposter,
Pls forgive me if you've heard this before:
Since having gone bionic due to with my condition (cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia) since 2003, (defib/pacemaker but w/ no coronary issues), I pretty much keep to the same diet as mentioned before. I further reduced my fat and sweets intake and I'm a moderate sipper of wine and an occasional beer.
For exercise now, having been a semi-reg runner and then cyclist (prior to '03), I've been able to maintain doing brisk walks. I feel fortunate that I can do that and occasional bike ride on Fl flat terrain.
Only time I've eaten rabbit was in italy, delicious, sigh. I do like bunnies. But I also like cattle and lambs and, yes, piggies. I haven't personally met any hogs of the animal type and would be wary in a pen with them, but while I am ok with eating pork, I prefer to think of it as a plastic wrapped item in the market.
I did see a rather big cooked hog on a sturdy table in a restaurant near Siena. That day I had a pasta and a good tuscan red.
I'm eating a lot more oily fish from tins, in a mix of 'it's good for me' and 'it's cheap', some chicken, say a package a month, and some braised pork or ground pork that I make into sausages. I like beef, but I've the budgetary problem.
My ex sent me a go-splurge holiday check (having hard times himself) and I went to the market and bought a porterhouse (waves to EdgarB) which I made last 5 meals, and a bottle of Jameson's, both very lux to me now. Hadn't had a good rare steak in at least a decade.
Birds, besides chickens, are a problem - I had quail at a superior restaurant something like 20 years ago, and am a mix of sorry (I see them on the other side of my duplex sometimes, love 'em) and unsorry (I'll try a lot of food once). I've seen Diane brake for quail... and all the cars behind her stop.
Many meat items are priced beyond my ability to pay. I saw a roast for over a hundred dollars not so many days ago. Porterhouse is about my favorite food, but I have not tasted one since forever. I often buy the tube of ground sirloin and an occasional small pot roast. We do splurge occasionally and have some ribs.
@edgarblythe,
Funny that you mention ribs...there's a social group that's all over US/NA (even EU too) called Meetup. They have various social, lecture and special interest groups ... maintained scheduling through an online organized system. I'll be attending a Beer Lover group that will have ribs and craft beer night at a local micro-brewery. I'm really looking fwd to that 'cause I've not had ribs in years.
