Thanks reyn. I knew there was a bit of history behind the show, but did't know anything.

@ossobuco,
Thanks, osso. I will check it out. I am thinking a heavy horse, because the tale happened in a farming community. Also a heavy horse would be less likely to fall down.

I was very impressed with the vice president last night. Sure, it was rehearsed that he would find Ryan's words amusing and/or outrageous, but he was articulate and easily countered Ryan's every statement. I have long considered that he would be a decent president. The highlights on TV this morning glossed over the true flavor of the debate in favor of Ryan. It was as though they saw a different encounter than what I saw last night. I hope every independent voter watched it live.

Been all over the property like a youngster, these days, repairing patio boards and posts, painting - digging where the dirt is piled against the patios, for I discovered live termites in one of them. I plan to keep up the pace for the foreseeable work days, at least until the results are easily evident to the casual passerby.

Punky the dog has taken to begging for snacks so often I have to ignore her. She knows what a soft touch am I and takes advantage, but I can't let her eat that stuff around the clock.

Ion keeps rerunning some Rocky movies. I love that series, but have seen them all enough times to pass on it this round.

politics and baseball - tis the season to be obsessed

I don't know about cable, but air TV has run out of ideas. I see rehashes of the same stories from program to program. Some shows have decided that explicit sex talk is the way to keep viewers interested. I would have thought so, too, twenty or thirty years ago. It isn't my age talking. These people should stand down and let someone else have a shot at it.

@edgarblythe,
The fact check on Ryan's rhetoric only confirms what Biden has done during the debate; proving Ryan's lies and more lies. These guys have no ethics or morals.

Oh, and remember all the conservative pundits who complained about style rather than content. We all know they're all liars and cheaters; can't seem to ever acknowledge their own lies and innuendos. This has become the party of lies - forget about conservatism.

Surprised Shocked

Oh my! Worst part of all this well have to live with the results of this crop of politican's shortcomings. I'm just hoping against hope that if by some strange twist Romney does get elected (shudder), that whoever he appoints to Supreme Court during his term doesn't cause Roe v. Wade to be overturned.

I know exactly what you mean!

Some of the channels on my cable lineup, when they run out of programming or money, or both, run a particular series the whole day!

These are always old series. If you've seen the series, you're out of luck.

I would totally agree.

A lot of TV these days, too, seems to be geared to the younger crowd. With some shows, not a face in it over 30.

I guess the producers feel only younger folks watch TV anymore.

Do advertisers really want to alienate anyone older than that demographic?

This situation occurs in programming that originates in the U.S. and Canada. If you were to watch English TV, it's totally different. The shows have mixed ages, and the commercials are often humerous and actually worthwhile watching.

The problem is that if anything different comes along (mainly out of the U.S.), it rarely seems to catch on, or they don't give it much time to do so.

I've seen some good shows come and go for this reason.

Currently, here's a couple of shows that I'm watching on my cable (I'm sure you will know nothing about them) that I hope will stick around:

Sinbad:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinbad_(TV_series)

Merlin:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merlin_(TV_series)

Arrow:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow_(TV_series)

Anyways, I could probably come up with more, but I don't want to overwhelm you.

A perfect example of a show that did not stay around, that was excellent, and different, was Crusoe (based on the book by Daniel Defoe):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusoe_(TV_series)

Unfortunately, it was cancelled.

@Ragman,
But the likelihood that'll happen is too big a gamble; I don't understand why women continue to support Romney-Ryan. Mystery of our times; they'd rather let "men" control their bodies in whatever way they please.

They'll be charged with murder if they have an abortion. Goofy!

According to the latest poll on electoral votes, Obama is dropping and Romney is gaining. Doesn't look good.

Liars win!

@cicerone imposter,
I admit that I have credibility issues with these temporary polls prior to 2 weeks before the election. I don't trust any of them - especially right after a debate.

I think (hope) these current trends are temporary. The smirking loony Biden facial antics dragged down opinions after his semi-success in the debate. I think the current events in Syria (murder of the diplomat and how security was handled) in the public eye may have reflected poorly in Obama-Biden.

All this SEEMS to have resulted in a positive blip towards Romney-Ryan.

In another few days or a week it'll level off. As we go on in time towards the election things will (or had better) swing back.

It was not partisan fervor that had me calling a decisive win for Biden. He was in control at least 80 of the 90 minutes. Also, Obama was not as bad as people are saying. I noticed that the put down of Obama escalates with every telling. If people had focused on which candidate was truthful, Obama could have phoned it in from home and been the winner. Issues ought to count more than visuals. In my view, Biden's antics mirrored Romney's, but people were less tolerant.

I bought some boards yesterday for the project at work. I did not get the 4X4 posts, because did not want to take the chance my load might get unbalanced in heavy traffic.

Sitting here, listening to the patter of rain. Fall colors do not show much in our area until quite late in the season. I cut some of my wire yesterday and began forming a horse head. It looks about right for an under structure. I have not as yet consulted a model. I think I may construct a framework of PVC piping to support the neck, body and legs. I hope to garner peons of praise for my effort. Can't decide if the finish ought or not to be glossy. Flat would be my first leaning, because the shiny might detract from the effect of a real horse and rider.

I have not done much about my 'horseman' project as yet, because I want to avoid as many mistakes as possible. It will not be ready for display this year anyway. I have other projects in mind as well. For outdoor displays of wooden figures and the like, I love the look of sign painter's paint. Last time I looked, it was still lead-based. Does anybody have a suggestion what other paint looks the best and has the durability?

It's going to be a physical work week. Lots of bad wood to replace. The siding is complete, but many boards surrounding the siding are very old.

Substantial progress was made on my book this past weekend. I have printed out most of the work, but still need to make a disc in case of computer failure.

The comic strip of Gasoline Alley was the first strip in which the characters actually aged. Skeezix, found as a baby on Walt's doorstep, is now an old man. Walt is well over a hundred. By the law of the strip he ought to expire. Yet he goes on.

Don't even want to think football this morning.

Angry Birds Star Wars is happening. Saw a TV ad.

My baloney has a first name, it's M_I_T

My new colloidal silver maker will arrive any day now. It comes with two rods of silver. I will have to buy some more of these rods at the next opportunity. My friend who has been sharing with me bought enough to last him about twenty years. The manufacturer asserts these makers will last a lifetime. A set of rods lasts several month to a year.

I believe the reason I cannot connect with J D Salinger is likely because my young angst was of a separate nature. Making it difficult to sympathize. While other young folks were reading Catcher, I was immersed in the work of Phillip Wylie. An atheist journalist-novelist. Author of Generation of Vipers, An Essay on Morals, Opus 21, Finnley Wren, The Disappearance, Night Unto Night, The Magic Animal. Co author of When Worlds Collide. Movie script writer of The Island of Dr Moreau. Originator of the Crunch and Des stories that spawned a TV series.

@neko nomad,
I gotta say, neko. I was disappointed there were no Underdog and Snoopy balloons at the parade. In Tomball we got clowns and Shrine of Arabia marchers (with male belly dancer) and rows of very old cars all shiny and a-ooga-ing. PUtin ain't warm and fuzzy like the Santa that closes our parade.

I boycotted the debate, because it seemed the first two were treated like beauty contests instead of debates. Besides, I already voted. On the state level, many of my votes went to Green candidates, because the local Democrats seem a bit mealy-mouthed to me.

It rained all afternoon, yesterday. The light to moderate soaking kind that benefits the trees. One of the moringas is taking the weather changes in stride. One is losing some leaves. Another is stunted, cowed by the nearby pine trees, I presume. The one in a pot on the porch so far does not look like a tree. It has never developed a woody trunk as yet and it wants to curl up.

Buying a lawnmower this afternoon. This one will be treated much more gently than its predecessors. I will clean the clinging grass and mud and baby powder its little behind before I put it away.

Just saw the new guy on Two and a Half Men is the highest paid actor on TV. Perhaps some of that dough ought to go to acting lessons.

Tried out the new mower yesterday. Much too smooth and powerful. I set its wheels high for the initial mowing. They can be lowered a bit at a time. I was tempted to buy the motorless kind, but then I would have had to borrow a power mower to cut everything very short and then mow faithfully once or twice per week. The new non power mowers look a bit flimsy, compared to the ones I used in the fifties.

I notice Roseanne Barr is on the ballot for president, in Florida. I would cast my vote for her before Romney.

Woman leaving the apartments after more than nineteen years. We have been good friends most of that. She actually moved into her new digs at the assisted living home by the hospital, but refused to give up her keys for nearly two months, because that's when her lease expires. It would not surprise me if she waits until midnight and drops them through the slot. Don't misinterpret my words. She is in essence a wonderful person. I am going to miss the way she always sought me out of a morning, just to tell me hello. She always wants to be considerate and helpful, but her neighbors get annoyed by her mannerisms and avoid her if possible. She is the sort to second guess herself continually and to push her thoughts beyond beating a dead horse. I used to compare her to Columbo, the Peter Falk character. - "Oh. Just one more thing" - I have noticed in the past few years that she has aged considerably. Despite being energetic and walking about in a youthful way, she has tripped several times on the concrete. I think she is eighty five. I will miss her.

Reminiscing the wonderful characters and oddballs who have inhabited these buildings has me comparing my experiences to Henry Miller's descriptions of his time working the Cosmodemonic Telegraph Company, in Tropic of Capricorn. Not that I would ever set out to novelize these people. I suppose any setting with continual turnover of personnel could generate a similar scenario.

Punky the dog is slow to get out of bed. It's rather cool out there. Not that she has any place to be this morning.
