Your opinion is what it is-- worthless maunderings of yet another cowardly armchair general.

Urging continued limitless sacrifice at the risk of life and limb for others while refusing to accept the same risks yourself is, however, indecent and downright obscene.

The idea that no one can support a war without being in the army is silly, but even that aside, I will point out for the third time that nothing bad you assert or even prove about my character has the effect of disproving my opinions.

People like you never engage in a simple, dignified debate of the content of an issue, preferring instead to take the "low road" and call names, attack the other's character, etc., etc. If you ever want to try to actually support your ideas by comparing them with mine, have me paged, but I won't hold my breath.

Whatever. Have it your way, Captain Hides-Under-The-Bed. You're a heroic supporter of democracy, unequaled at advocating that others bear your burden, that anyone other than you pay the price you so cannily avoid. Keep it up, you'll win that Medal of Freedom yet!

I'd have said Medal of Honor, but then you'd actually need to wear a uniform to get that one and we know you'd never stoop to anything so lowly and, dare we say it, dangerous.

You're a "quick" learner I see. Okay, well, now that you have me pegged, how about trying to show that the content of my opinion was wrong? Up to this point you haven't done the tiniest particle of damage to anything I've asserted. It only shows the feebleness of your opinions that you can't and won't try to defend them.

What part of "worthless maunderings" didn't you understand, Lieutenant Shakes-In-The-Closet?

Are you actually so stupid that you believe that using a negative adjective defeats someone's arguments? Anyone can call anything "worthless maunderings." It proves exactly nothing.

My argument was that the defense of a feeble fledgling democracy against barbarians who wish to pull it down and replace it with a dictatorship is an appropriate use of our military. So far you haven't even addressed it. Are your opinions so very feeble that you can't offer a single word of support for them?

Temper, temper, Colonel Head-For-The-Hills.

Are you actually such a dimwit that you can't understand the definition of the word hypocrite?

No, I'm such a dimwit that I believe that attacking me, or even absolutely proving bad things about my character, doesn't in any way, shape or form argue against the correctness of anything that I've said. I can look at Maxwell's Equations in physics and then make all sorts of attacks on his character, call his theory stupid, etc., etc. but in so doing, I have not in any way disproven anything in his theory.

The pattern here is clear. I make an assertion of opinion and you respond with a personal attack and distraction. To this point, you have made not the tiniest effort to either address my opinions or support your own. I shall conclude that your position on the issues is so feeble that you dare not actually attempt to defend it.

Well, you are partially right, Major Crawls-Into-A-Hole. You ARE a dimwit and a cowardly hypocritical one at that. Your "arguments" or your parroting of the GOP party line, whichever you choose to call it, deserves nothing but short shrift. Events have already proven them to be unworthy of serious consideration. That you yourself are too scared or too arrogant to match deeds to your oh-so-brave words speaks volumes about your commitment to your self-styled "arguments."

blacksmithn you are one of the greats. The big brave right always hides behind outrage and an insult to their tender sensibilities when confronted by someone they cannot intimidate or claim the moral highground on.

Yes, when danger rears it's ugly head, they're always first to volunteer someone else.

True patriots all. So inspiring!

As I've stated here over and over again, and as would be blatantly obvious to most people, nothing you accuse me of, or even prove about my personal character takes even one step towards demonstrating that your ideas are correct and mine incorrect. I have tried repeatedly in vain to get you to compare your opinion with mine and demonstrate that yours is the correct one, but you are apparently unable to do so. I state my opinion, and your response is simply to discuss me, engage in name calling, and now to simply declare that it's obvious and proven that you're correct - in short, the tactics of a child. If this were a debate, you would simply be disqualified since you cannot offer a word of support for your opinions. My opinion can be defended on its own merits. Yours, evidently, cannot. Any rational judge would declare that I had prevailed in this argument, since you have repeatedly demonstrated that you can't defend your position. You forfeit the argument, and I'm not going to waste any more time on you. I, personally, would be ashamed if I had to take such a "low road" to promote my ideas, but you apparently are not. Over and out.

Cutting and running, Corporal Quakes-With-Fear? No doubt you have a pressing appointment to go encourage young people to enlist. Or perhaps write a few incisive letters to the editor of the National Review, exhorting other like-minded patriots to continue encouraging the sacrifice of others.

At any rate, it would certainly have to be something that wouldn't involve any personal sacrifice on your part...

And yes, Blacksmith, continues to prefer to sling ad hominem invectives than debate your arguments.

This is exemplary of a dynamic that is so repetitive as to be boring, but one with which I struggle myself.

Absolutely no criticism intended here, but at what point do you give up?

Blacksmith will never concede you are right, and (more importantly) he will never acknowledge that he is ducking the issue by resorting to personal attack.

At some point, your point is made. Is there really a reason to remain engaged with someone like blacksmith, hero of BiPo, when he is incapable of debating the issues?

Your thoughts?

PS: Blacksmith - Hero of BiPo - Although I used your posting as an entree into the discussion, this is not intended as a response to anything you've posted. Please do not feel compelled, for my sake, to respond.

You wedge yourself into the exchange with aspersions on blacksmithn's style and motivation, then invite him not to respond.

You smell.

Generally, when someone thinks he can defeat an argument with a distraction, I try to goad him back into debating the actual topic. Whether he does or doesn't, I figure I have prevailed either way. If he doesn't, I figure that I have exposed him for someone who lacks the guts and/or the grace to actually compare his ideas to mine. If he does, then I just crush his argument. It is sad, though, that it's so common to find people here who are willing to try to promote their ideas with ad hominems and irrelevancies.

This comment of yours does not constitute a refutation of any of my arguments on the subject of this thread. Would you care to discuss the actual thread topic, or, like most liberals, are you going to stick to your safe area of ad hominems and distractions?

A RecapÂ…

Corporal Quakes-With-Fear
Sergeant Hides-Behind-Others
Lieutenant Shakes-In-The-Closet
Captain Hides-Under-The-Bed
Major Crawls-Into-A-Hole
Colonel Head-For-The-Hills

The Army Ranks left to blacksmithn are:

Private

That is, if he doesn't use those ranks with addenda, such as:
Private First Class
Staff Sergeant
Sergeant First Class
Master Sergeant
First Sergeant
Command Sergeant Major
First Lieutenant
Second Lieutenant
Lieutenant Colonel
Lieutenant General
Major General

But then, he could segue over to another branch; then he'd have whole other lists!

For example,
Navy:
Commander
Seaman
CPO

Air Force:
Tech Sergeant
