Westlake, LA is a small town (population about 4500) about an hour and 45 minutes from where I live.
The man who was 3 days away from starting his term as the town's first black mayor was found at 10pm with a bullet wound to his chest in a building that used to be a high school.
There was no note, no signs of depression or desperation leading up to it. The local authorities investigation lasted 4 hours - they cleaned up his truck, and returned it to his family. The coroner called it a suicide.
The state police are going to do a second autopsy, and they are now taking up the investigation.
Old times there are not forgotten.

Here's what he looked like...
I'm sorry. I should have specified updates as they arise. Thanks for the story.
I hope the fourth estate gets some action.
Shot in the chest and designated a suicide? How?
If the locals botch this, I expect a federal investigation.
Yeah, well - that's kinda the point. Along with the fact he had everything to live for, having just been sworn in and being wildly popular, and having just begun learning his new job.
I didn't read the entire article before posting. I was in a hurry at the time.
My last post was in answer to littlek's.

That's right. Ignore the old guy.
Cha! Like that'd ever happen, edgar!
From what I read the other day, it seems like the powder burn, denoting close proximity, is the sole "evidence" of suicide.
To me, it is illogical to use one flimsy detail like that to rule a suicide.
Of course, it could have been a suicide--but even then, it seems like someone would have been pressuring him. Blackmail, threats against his family,... After a political win, suicide is way outside logical behavior.
The ruling was suspiciously quick and careless.
Doesn't the gun hand usually have a powder burn as well? hmmm?
If he had LOST the election, maybe...
