@Lightwizard,
We've talked about this movie in the past, LW. It's never made much of an impression on me but I do recall the different aspects of Joan Crawford's character. She was indeed not presented as one-dimensional.
The last movie I saw on DVD was Stay - very sad but incredible movie with good actors' playing of Gosling, Watts and McGregor
@eoe,
Can't leave out Barbara Stanwyck who had strong leading roles in several Westerns.
@3dfan,
Welcome young hatchling,hoping you can look around the threads and come back soon.
Harvest of past week(s):
- The Edge of Love (2008), WWII period drama, Dylan Thomas is presented as a perfect asshole.
- Bedtime Stories (2008), Disney fluff, see The Fall (2006) instead
- 27 Dresses (2008), romantic comedy, too predictable
- Miffo (2003), Swedish drama-comedy
- The Colour of War (2001), documentary series, unique colour shots of WWII
- Bare Bea (2004, Just Bea), Norwegain coming of age story, amusing
- The Jacket (2005), timetravel story with Brody and Kneightly, OK
@Paaskynen,
- The Invasion (2007), remake of the body snatchers, the original remains best.
- Cleaner (2007) decent crime thriller by Renny Harlin
- Se, jie (2007, Lust, Caution), well-made historic spy thriller, but could not draw me in
- The Spirit (2008), another graphic novel made film, but does not live up to its predecessor Sin City
- Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009), had to see it, lots of effects, lost on me.
Looking back at the 105 films I have seen this summer. I can recommend the following as the best I saw on DVD this season (in the order in which I saw them):
- Whale Rider (2002), excellent magic realist drama from New Zealand
- Venus (2006), British generation gap drama, quite good.
- Fitzcarraldo (1982), nobody embodies obsession like Klaus Kinski in the jungle
- Evening (2007), star-spangled cast delivers solid acting performance in pretty decent relationship drama
- The Fall (2006), no big names, but amazing imagery, a story about an imaginary world, makes full use of the scenery and backdrops India (among ohther places) has to offer, quite nice actually.
- The Jane Austen Book Club (2007), quite likable women's film
- Die Fälscher (2007, The Counterfeiters), good German concentration camp drama based on true strory
- Käki (2002, Kukushka/Cuckoo), very good Russian film about war and humanity. A Finnish and a Russian soldier meet near the end of WWII at the kota of a single Sami woman. None understands what the others say, but they have to live together until peace is signed.
- Burn after reading (2008), dark comedy by Coen brothers, quite amusing
- Breakfast on Pluto (2005), it takes quite a while to start liking this film. It is very much about love.
- Things We Lost in the Fire (2007), really good film, who cannot but love Halley Berry in a serious role?!
- Äideistä parhain (2005, Mother of Mine), Excellent, one of those rare Finnish films that are good in every respect (story, acting, score, cinematography, etc), very emotional wartime family drama.
- Sungnyangpali sonyeoui jaerim (2002, Resurrection of the Little Match Girl), so completely different from what I expected that I simply had to like it.
Best comedy:
The Gourmet Club (2004), culinary comedy about age gap and class struggle, fun!
Best animation:
- Hoodwinked (2005), quite amusing animation
Blades of Glory.
Stupid and silly. Just the way Will Ferrell should be. I really liked Amy Poehler in this.
I bought a four movie set of John Wayne's war films, for about $9. It seems he pretend won WWII in the Pacific. I can't recall if he "fought" in Europe in any movie.
"Blades of Glory". I'm embarrassed to say I saw it and laughed and laughed. Will Ferrell is a new kind of stupid.
I watched "The Secret Lives of Bees" last night. 3 of the 5 lead characters were/are music performers. I found that somewhat troubling. Young actors have been complaining that entertainers from the music industry are poaching their jobs and it isn't fair. I have to agree with them. In more capable hands, this movie could have been better and the roles stronger. A gifted singer and/or songwriter does not an actor make.
A docu with no happy handing about a mixed race Vietnamese girl sent to the US at the end of the Vietnam War.
She grows up as an "All American Girl" but when she goes back to meet her family recently, there is a huge chasm between cultures. Heartbreaking .

Saw "State of Play" last night. Russell Crowe hs been porking up and taking crusty lessons in order to play this invstigative reporter for the Wasington Post. The story involves a complex twist and turner of murders, intrigue, big business, a"Blackwater" clone company, and congressmen with libidinal problems .Be prepared for several nifty twists.
EXCELLENT flick.
Russel Crowe has been showing some real talent in his movies after "Gladiator" (which, in my mind was a real pile of valium).
Others in the movie were Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck (hes actually not bad or else the others carry him well) Helen Mirren,Jason Bateman (excellent pwerformance), Jeff Daniels
@farmerman,
I was planning on renting that by NetFlix but dropped the service until Spring. It did get good reviews.
@Lightwizard,
yeh, we cut it off until we get back home. I want to rent the last season of DEXTER. Jimmy ASMits was in that season and it was particularly good albeit a bit bloodier
Inglorious Bastards - it was ok.
@barrythemod,
I just finished
Safety Last (1923) 10 minutes ago. Its by far the funniest silent film I have seen. In about 15 minutes I'll finish off that one DVD with the 3
Harold Lloyd shorts.
@farmerman,
Yeah, I just got an E mail ad for Showtime for $7.99 a month for a year, so I'm going to catch up on Season Three there. I rented Season One and Two from Netflix and practically watched a Dexter Marathon. Okay, so I had one bad dream I can attribute to an over-saturation of gory horror. What a fascinating creation for a character -- a vigilante serial killer who does the blood work in a lab for the police! Ingenious!
@tsarstepan,
Love "Safety Last" -- it's a ROTFLOL.
@barrythemod,
This afternoon, I watched two major cinematic classics via the medium of DVD.
Lauren Bacall and
Humprey Bogart in
The Big Sleep and by coincidence
Lauren Bacll,
Betty Grable and
Marilyn Monroe in
How to Marry a Millionaire.
Both are worth catching. But I'm wonderfully surprised how hilarious the latter film was (far more then I expected). A 8/10 and 10/10 respectively.
I just watched 'Gamer' with Gerard Butler in the leading Roll....
Set in a future-world where humans can control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online gaming environments, a star player (Butler) from a game called "Slayers" looks to regain his independence while taking down the game's mastermind.
I loved it...it was very different. If you like 'Death Race' you will love this movie.
