@farmerman,
ahhhh....Daniel Craig.I heard Liv Schreiber was good too
OK, another weekend:
- Premonition (2007), OK thriller
- Beatrix Potter (2006), amiable costume flick
- Becoming Jane (2007), I kept seeing Anne Hathaway as a fairytale princess not as Jane Austen
- The Jane Austen Book Club (2007), thought of as double bill with above, but much more likable (IMHO)
- Southland Tales (2006), totally confusing apocalyptic/comic tale for those who (like me) have not read the prequel graphic novel.
- Blind Dating (2007), harmless romantic comedy
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Doubt
Two films the Oscars were created for.
@Lightwizard,
we bought "Doubt" and viewed it 2 weeks ago, good film, I enjoyed it.
@dyslexia,
I am now searching for a dvd of "Paris Texas" a film I saw back in the 80's that I really enjoyed.
@dyslexia,
It's is out of the catalog for now. There are used copies at Amazon for $ 30.00, hardly worth it as it's like to be released as a new DVD and Blu-Ray. Trouble is, it's actually a foreign independent film release by 20th Century Fox who has not been in a hurry to release older films that are not in the best condition. The Fox Movie Channel on cable and satellite has broadcast the movie in wide screen, but no HD. I would imagine HDNet or the upcoming Fox Movie Channel HD will be the first to show the film before another DVD release. So this makes it a good idea to join NetFlix how does rent the film (for less than $ 1.00 if you get two movies at one time and watch them they day them come in the mail and return them the next day). It may not be copy-guarded which means it's likely easy to dub it onto VHS, or even burn a DVD. It's also been on Independent Film Channel, Sundance and Turner Classic Movies.

I'm not sure whether they have an E mail alert system for when a film is showing but I'll try to locate it.
I couldn't find any alert -- there might be one on IFC, TCM, Fox Movie Channel, or Sundance.
@Barry The Mod,
For $34.00, I'd certainly advise anyone to be patient. The cover art is not the original so I'm suspicious this is a dubbed copy of the VHS in pan-and-scan, and no guarantee on picture and sound quality.
I loved Paris Texas at the time, although I went to see it in the first place for Nastassja Kinski who was at the top of her hotness at the time. I am just about to see a film with her late father...
Anyway, last week's titles:
- I racconti di Canterbury (The Canterbury Tales, 1972), lots of homoerotic imagery in this Pasolini version of Chaucer's tales.
- Neverwas (2005), big names in a story circling around an imaginary world that has affected the protagonists in different ways.
- The Fall (2006), no big names, but amazing imagery, also a story about an imaginary world, makes full use of the scenery and backdrops India (among ohther places) has to offer, quite nice actually.
- We Own the Night (2007), pretty poor crime drama with even poorer ending
- The Secret Life of Girls (1999), teen drama-comedy, good clean fun
- Feast of Love (2007), a bit predictable but nice feel-good movie
MGM HD is having a Sidney Portier festival and watched "The Wilby Conspiracy" with Michael Caine, Portier as an activist fleeing the authorities with the empathetic Englishman in apartheid South Africa.
@Lightwizard,
Are they showing "A Patch of Blue" or "For the Love of Ivy"? Love those two. And in retrospect, the comedies he did with Bill Cosby weren't half-bad. There were some funny moments in "Uptown Saturday Night".
@eoe,
Last night impulsively put on Spielberg's "Always" - Richard Dreyfus, Holly Hunter, John Goodman. One of those really off-the-wall plots and sort of a fluff piece, even for Spielberg, but quite well done and entertaining just the same.
@eoe,
I haven't seen them yet, but "Paris Blues" with Paul Newman was on today along with "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs." Not sure if those two you're looking for are MGM movies.
Fanboys
It's about a group of StarWars geeks who conspire to break into Skywalker Ranch and steal a print of the new (at the time) StarWars film, Phantom Menace, as a last hurrah for their friend who is dying of cancer. It reminded me of my own StarWars geek friend who died of cancer almost two years ago. He would have totally identified with the movie.
May the force be with you dan_solo (that was his actual email name, the geek).
I just saw Fitzcarraldo and I have been at a loss to find a word to describe it, but it is magnificent, yes, magnificent is the word. This film by Werner Herzog featuring Klaus Kinski, I missed in 1982 when I was a younger man, much to my chagrin. I saw it now on DVD and apart from the bad German dubbing for the local characters it was truly great. This was literally an earth-moving effort for director and crew. Half adventure novel, half Joseph Conrad this is a film to be savoured. Interestingly, the film has more than one thing in common with the contemporary novel by Theroux "The Mosquito Coast", which was made into film in 1986.
- Fitzcarraldo (1982), nobody embodies obsession like Klaus Kinski
- Evening (2007), star-spangled cast delivers solid acting performance in pretty decent relationship drama
- Sleepover (2004), very predictable teen comedy
- Femme Fatale (2002), decent action thriller that comes across as a collage of scenes from other well-known films set in France
- Step up (2006), one of those overly predictable dance films
- Death at a Funeral (2007), very British comedy, has its moments.
