Ah, well the people here are a different mix. There's less moderation of rudeness. We've lost a few good people to the rudeness, busy lives, and unfortunately to death himself. It's definitely not as much FUN.

And back to movies (pardon us folks). Babs, have you rented Kung Fu Hustle?

I saw:
- Mamma Mia! (2008), finally an upbeat flick in which nobody gets hurt and everybody is happy in the end. See la Streep and a former James Bond sing a duet!
- National Security (2003), Martin Lawrence is so successful at playing an obnoxious character that it spoils the film for me.

Finally available on DVD! Mike Leigh's http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107653/ Naked is by turns hilarious,terrifying and thought-provoking.It won best Director and Best Actor at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.
As with most Mike Leigh films,there's nothing pretty about the characters or story which is just the way a mike Leigh fan (ME) wants it.

....and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808417/ Persepolis,a biographical story following the poignant and often hilarious adventure of a rebellious,heavy metal loving tomboy experiencing the turmoil of adolescence during the tyrannical Iranian revolution,to a teenage exile in Austria,where she discovers that the benefits of freedom can be just as shocking as the repressive regime she was forced to leave behind.Returning to Iran as an alienated adult,our heroine must now decide where it is her heart and her home must lay.This is one of the most sublime animated feature films you're likely to experience.

Last week, we pulled "Giant" out of our rather extensive VHS & DVD collection and watched it again. Took all evening, but it was the same gigantic production that it was when it was first made so many decades ago.

Next I think we'll take on the mega-production "Cleopatra". Haven't watched that in many years either.

@Paaskynen,
- Mrs Henderson Presents (2005), at first sight a rather flimsy story, but with history and really great acting thrown in it turns out to be a good film.
- 10,000 BC (2008), good SFX, story rather weak
- The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008), not for young children, adventure story for boys and tomboy grlz.

I just watched Semi-Pro (thanks Dasha!). I didn't love it, but I liked it ok. I'm not sure that my melancholy mood didn't color my opinion. Certain bits of it were quite good.

@Foxfyre,
I love watching old mega-classics like that. Another fav, "Gone With the Wind".

I've always wanted to have a "Godfather" party. 12 hrs!

@barrythemod,
My wife and I are working our way through my recently purchased DVDs of the old mini-series "Centennial," based on the James Michener book.

A woman was about to throw out copies of Camelot, Oklahoma, State Fair and Carousel. I had not seen the first three, so I took them. Camelot had some good scenes, but lacked something. Not sure what.
Oklahoma was great fun.
State Fair so lacked drama, I finally gave up on it.

It was Hubby's night to pick the movie and he chose "You've Got Mail" - Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. We hadn't watched it in years. Pretty much fluff and sort of a chick flick, but we enjoyed it again.

@Paaskynen,
This weekend I enjoyed:
- Kamome diner (2006, Ruokala Lokki), very modest Japanese women's lib flick, set in Helsinki.
- Into the Blue (2005), utterly forgettable The Deep clone
- Va, vie et deviens (2005), already saw it this summer, but it was worth seeing again.

@Paaskynen,
- Astérix aux jeux olympiques (2008), funny, but not as funny as Mission Cléopatre
- Black Water (2007), thriller rather than horror movie, low budget, but not bad.

@Paaskynen,
Collateral - it's such an unusual character for Cruise to do.

@Paaskynen,
Well let's see:
- D.O.A. (1988), quite OK, the 80s hairdo's were a bit weird
- The Evil Below (1989), typical B film, ditto on the hair.
- The Nanny Diaries (2007), low on drama, but with a message
- DOA: Dead or Alive (2006), lightweight video game film, not to be mixed up with D.O.A. above
- 300 (2006), totally gay and totally not historical
- Something New (2006), funny reverse discrimination flick
- Zombie Strippers! (2008), one of those films you want to see purely because of the ridiculous title, unfortunately the funniest scenes are the deleted scenes.
- Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008), OK if the double message is taken into account.
