Last thing I watched: the 2007 Met Opera production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, starring Renee Fleming as Onegin's love interest, Tatiana.

I mainly watched it because I had already read the original novel-in-verse by Pushkin that the opera was based on. Whereas I seem to remember the book focusing mainly on Onegin, the opera partly shifts the focus to Tatiana, who does as much singing as he does, so that they're equal partners in the story. The character Onegin is a very jaded young man, and the intentional lack of ornate scenery does much to emphasize his alienation from society. Overall I thought it was a very beautiful opera, although I admittedly haven't seen many operas and have little to compare it to. If you're in the mood for something different, skip the 1999 Ralph Fiennes movie adaptation and see this opera instead.

I saw Gone Girl.
Totally engrossing from start to finish. Great suspenseful story - even after you figure out what's going to happen. The ending left me a little 'Huh? Whuzzat?', but overall would recommend it.

Just saw The Judge with Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Jr.
You know those movies where there are stars in it, but the story is so weak they can't save the movie? This one is not like that. Powerful drama. Powerful acting -
one of the best movies I've seen in a good while.

It is a very good movie, but I can think of several other of his films that I would put in contention as his best. A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, Cinderella Man, Backdraft...

@barrythemod,
Evidence (2013)

Just watched this on Netflix. Had some actors I knew, so I thought I would give it a whirl tonight.

70% of the movie is found footage horror movie and the other 30% is a cop thriller/procedural. This was a mixed bag for me. Most of the found footage parts were almost unwatchable. But, I did like the huge twist at the end.

I'd give this a C

Rewatched Raging Bull on TV.
30 + years later, I still think it's overrated.

@fbaezer,
I watched Philomena last night and really enjoyed it. It's very poignant and moving, with just enough humor thrown in. Judi Dench was so very very good--as she usually is--she gave a wonderfully dimensional portrayal of Philomena Lee. Just an overall good movie.

I've been in a heavy transitioning period. 2014 was not a snood year.

Last night we watched FURY on PPV starring Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf. Kind of your typical WWII movie but very well acted. We both enjoyed it.

Nancy and I watched "The Judge" last night.

It was okay...but a bit predictable.

Robert Duvall was Robert Duvall...Robert Downey, Jr. was Robert Downey, Jr....which is just fine with me. I enjoy watching those two do what they do.

I really enjoy Vincent Donafrio in movies...and he did a terrific job with the character he portrayed in this film.

I couldn't stand either Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13. He took both based on true stories and borified both. White washed the first one and I almost fell asleep on the second. Still haven't seen Cinderella Man. Backdraft was immensely watchable. Not sure if it would it would potentially hold up though in subsequent rewatch these days.

Last night: The Imitation Game (2014): 10/10

I've seen all 8 2015 Best Picture nominees.

This morning: Life After Beth (2014): 8/10 . Pretty funny and original zombie comedy.

Just finished watching Series 2 of The Fall, which has proven to be consistently excellent throughout.

The reason why I'm mentioning this here in the fillum thread is that the baddie in The Fall is this guy:

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/01/24/video-undefined-1AEC7DAF00000578-751_636x358.jpg

..........who will be very well known across the western world after his film opens on the 14th Feb (UK).

Here is a trailer for The Fall, and you can find a couple of episodes on yootoob (albeit with spanish substitles) so you can see for yourself why they offered the upcoming starring role to him.

Watched Nightcrawler tonight on Demand, very creepy. Jake Gyllenhaal played a very creepy character. The voice he used reminded me of Tony Perkins.
