@glitterbag,
I agree. Why I wrote a thank-you letter to my personal hero James Megellas of the 82nd Airborne

I watched Old Boy - a remake by Spike Lee starring Josh Brolin of a 2003 Korean movie that was an interpretation of a Japanese manga comic book.

As Charles Barkley likes to say - It was TURRIBLE. I didn't even make it all the way to the end, even though I stopped and started it twice to try and plod through. I hear the ending is "dark". The rest of the movie is so inane, gratuitously bloody and boring that I will never witness that for myself.

Yuch

I switched off Dr. Who on TV yesterday beause it's degenerated into a stupid "kids show for adults" in recent years with a succession of nancy-boy doctors.
The BBC should finally pull the plug on it and spend their cash on producing a proper sensible sci-fi show along the lines of their old classic Blakes Seven

NETFLIX:

"Boss," featuring one of my favorites (Kelsey Grammer) CHEWING up the scenery, has been binge-watch worthy lately.

Grammer, to me, is like a sophomore in the William Shatner School of Over-Acting, so I always get a smile watching him - but this vehicle fits his style perfectly. He's the mayor of dirty, corruption-ridden Chicago - the characters are well-drawn, the acting is great, and the storyline and sexy overtones kept me clicking "next episode."

Don't want to spoil with additional details.

@Lash,
I just finished serial binging "Boss". Actually, I think that Grammer is perfect for the part. He is so deliciously evil. I did not care for the sex scenes. There are way too many, and they are over the top. It almost feels that the sex scenes are being used to take up time.

Going backwards in time, I' m first discovering "Six Feet Under". As a devoted fan of Michael C. Hall in "Dexter", it is so interesting to see him in such a different role.

Comparing the sex scenes in those two shows, I find that those in "Six Feet Under" are far more appropriate, although much less explicit.

Was going through NETFLIX the other night and happened across something called Old Goats.

Strange tale about relationship matters for these 3 older men. Strange movie at times, often didn't know what was about to happen and was surprised. Overall it was an enjoyable movie.

Here's the trailer for it:

Just watched Captain Phillips. Enjoyed it tremenjously. I didn't know for certain, until the Captain was taken off of the ship that it was based on a story I followed, daily, in the news.

Watched a BBC mini series called The Last Nazi.
The first two parts were awful but the third was incredibly powerful.

Children Of The Master Race tells the story of the Nazi Lebensborn program supported by Himmler and the SS that assisted the development of Aryan children.
One of the grown-up children finds out his father was responsible for murdering thousands of Poles in 1939 and goes to Blizyn Poland to ask forgiveness from the daughter of a school principal murdered there.
A very moving documentary.

Watched 2 new movies this week.

1. A long Way Down starring Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots and Aaron Paul.
I loved it, cast were perfect especially Imogen.

2. Under the Skin starring Scarlett Johansson.
After you've figured out what you just watched you'll either hate this film or love it, no in between.
I loved it, dark .. different.

@eurocelticyankee,
Under The Skin sounds great.

A long Way Down got a couple of reviews that are quite witty:

Hornby's suicidal quartet vow to go on; viewers lose the will to live.

The really unforgivable thing about the film is that it uses suicide as a MacGuffin.

@panzade,
I forgot to mention it's set in Scotland, how surreal is that.

I've been watching lots of documentaries on Netflix. A Neil deGrasse Tyson 6-part series under the Great Courses umbrella was very good with lots of insights to be had.

Because I thought I could not stay up long enough to rewatch Neil tonight, I watched MASH which I hadn't seen since it played in theatres. There were parts I remembered -- the shower scene of course and the request for chest cutter -- and parts that were familiar once I saw them. I did not remember the football game at the end at all.

It was nice to be reminded that Donald Sutherland was once hot. So was Elliot Gould. But every woman who ever tacked his "personality poster" to her wall, as I did, does not forget how hot he was. The acting was very naturalistic, especially Sutherland's acting.

I am certain that I appreciated the movie more now than I did then. It was funny, surreal and rather Monty Pythonesque. The Pythons were on television before MASH hit the theatres but probably not before the movie was written.

I'm glad I saw it. It's just one of a short list of movies I have to revisit.

@plainoldme,
we watched "A SImple Plan" last night. Its a sleeper that takes time to get rolling but once it does, its really captivating. Billy Bob Thornton plays this "Simple minded" BIL who is a key to this story about "events spiraling out of control"

It's very much in the realm of Stanley Kubrick weird/surreal. Very original Sci-fi film. Lot of questions yet.... I enjoyed it though I can't say I loved it.

@tsarstepan,
We saw the "Grand Budapest Hotel", it's jam packed with numerous well-known actors and was quirky and enjoyable. I would watch it again, but I'm not sure everyone here would enjoy it. Adrian Brody and William Defoe were gloriously menacing.

Fascinating to me on Netflix: "Forgotten Planet" is about dead towns and the historical explanations. Three CA towns included - one I pass all the time.

Interesting to hear about the Salton Sea. Some European villages, as well.

Saw a remarkable movie last night called Young Adult(2011), directed by Jason Reitman(Juno).
Charlize Theron returns to her hometown Mercury Minnesota to seduce her high school sweetheart(Patrick Wilson) who's happily married with a new-born daughter.
Theron is one of the most unlikeable characters in film history but Reitman manages to make us care for her.
In the stellar cast is Patton Oswalt(King Of Queens) shifting from comedy to a serious role without a hitch.
Highly recommended.
