Canada thread, eh? I don't know ... doesn't really feel, uh, well ... Canadian to go around tooting our horn. On the other hand, look at all the Americans already on this thread. Must be ok then. If we're nice to them maybe they'll spend lots of money here ...

Pass the cinnamon timbits over here, ehBeth! Thanks.

I see that The Prince has some knowledge of our city. Did you know the area centering around Church & Wood Streets, sometimes called Gaytown, has a long (in Canadian terms), prestigious history:

Quote:
Alexander Wood came to Canada in 1793 and settled in Kingston. In 1797 he opened a store, one of three, in York. In 1798 he was a gazetted lieutenant in the York Militia. He magistrated in 1800 and became Commissioner for the Court of Requests in 1805. Involved in a homophobic scandal in 1810, Wood returned to Scotland was appointed for two years but then resumed his duties in York. In 1817 Alexander Wood inherited the family estates and moved back to Scotland. He returned to York in 1821 where he lived for the next 21 years acting as agent for absentee landowners and executive member of several organizations. He had a long, successful career in public service as executor of nearly every charitable and philanthropic society in York, usually as treasurer.

In 1826 Alexander Wood purchased fifty acres of land east of Yonge Street and north of Carlton Street (Toronto). The citizens referred to this land as "Molly Wood's Bush" . "Molly" was the derogatory word at that time for a gay man. Alexander Wood had three streets in this area named after him indicating the esteem given to him and his importance to the community. "Molly Wood's Bush" is now the gay village of Toronto.

Wood visited Scotland in 1842 where he died in 1844. At his death the British Colonist newspaper called him one of Toronto's "most respected inhabitants".

The fact that sane Torontonians don't want Olympics or any international exhibition -- proving once again why Toronto is the economic engine of Canada.

i suggest toronna build another "skydome" and call it "the sky is the limit ! " .
surely there is enough money floating around in toronna and with a "slight" increase in property taxes the citizens can easily afford to give away another facility to big business .

Warner Brothers were from Ontario and Goldwyn from Montreal. Norma Shearer, Marie Dressler, Warren Beatty and his sister Shirley Maclean's parents were Canadians. Then there was Raymond Massey. Glenn Ford just died a few weeks ago.

"Sound of Music" has strong Canadian links: Heather Menzies (Louisa) is from Toronto, (Liesl) Charmian Carr's father is from Toronto, (Captain Georg von Trapp) Christopher Plummer is from Montreal. Debbie Turner's (Marta) parents are from Manitoba.

Mike Myers ~ also the voice of Shrek. Apparently, he recorded the original Shrek several times using different accents as suggested by the producers. Finally, he asked to use his own choice -- and the Scottish ogre was born.
