Good advice re: birdfeeders, stradee. In Winter those birds that don't migrate but stick around need a lot more food than they do in the Summer. If they don't get it, they don't starve to death (there's usually enough food provided by nature to sustain them) but -- they freeze to death! They need the extra calories during the cold weather to keep their circulation going.

I've been clicking every day, like clockwork, usually at about 5:30 a.m.

Dan, i was suprised seeing the male so close to the house. The doe s and babies are skittish since a number of the animals were killed. One doe and male from a semi, two others - doe s and two babies also killed by vehicles. So the remainder of the herd that generally visits the house, were to say the least, jumpy. Males protect the females, and there are a few deer still quite young, perhaps that's why the male wasn't afraid of feeding near the house, plus the babies and females are regular visitors. One deer told a deer then told another deer... Very Happy

The pellets are a special blend just for deer, lots of vitamin suppliments for keeping them healthy during the cold weather, but the supply isn't the only food they'll forage. Not a good idea feeding them consistently with alfalfa because it hinders their ability to survive naturally. Oh, and Clem's gone. Crying or Very sad Lyn's still ok though and so are her babies.

Merry, the strangest thing happened. One little bird kept landing on the window sill of two of the house windows. Not certain if there was a color or something the animal saw - but i thought the poor thing was just starving, so i found a pre-seeded tubular bird feeder for wild canaries at K-Mart {inexpensive} and placed it by the window and under the eaves, near where the bird was landing. Birds doing ok now, stopped knocking on the window and the feeders good for other smaller birds also. The smaller species had a lot of competition at bird feeders from larger birds, Jays, etc. Not any more. Very Happy

Yeah, I know what you mean, Stradee. Those tubular feeders are great fir chickadees and finches, too. The jays and such leave 'em alone generally.

I'm listening to a radio interview with Loreena Mckennit about musical migration. Her new c.d., An Ancient Muse, follows the path that led to "Celtic Music".

Quinlan Road - Loreena's website

about the Muse

Quote:
the journey takes her in search of the Celts' easternmost paths, from the plains of Mongolia to the kingdom of King Midas and the Byzantine Empire. Along the way, she muses on the concepts of home, of travel in all its incarnations, of the cultural intermingling that underpins human history and our universal legacies of conflict and hope.

Even if ... click ... the music of the world doesn't appeal to you I think these liner notes might.

Stradee,
I wish I could watch your herd.
When we spent the summers in the country in a very remote house we could watch them. The kids loved them. Here in the city.. just the herd of fallow deer in the park.

My bird feeder is up too. Sadly there are less and less birds around.

First Sunday in Advent--first candle, some decoration and balking the Stollen today.

Tomorrow I will cut cherry branches- and hope they will bloom at Christmas.

Hi all, the crows are about the only birds left here - it's been freezing the past few nights.

bookmarked the site for further listening, ehBeth. Nice.

I'm guessing that someone from the neighborhood either forgot to replenish thier feeders, or the people relocated. Could very well be the weather - who knows. Can't recall a winter since moving to the Sierras where even with the cold weather, there's an abundace of birds that for whatever reason, arn't migrating.

ul, the deer are plentiful for the region, and i feel very fortunate to be observing the animals. The interactions btwn each animal and their herd companions quite remarkable. There isn't a hierarchy, but elder females taking babysitting responsibilities seriously, they attend the babies when mothers rest. The males are very good fathers and protectors until the babies are old enough to run with thier mothers and avoid predators, then the male leaves the herd, but i've noticed the males don't venture very far until the babies are yearlings. Then nature keeps the herds at a manageable level {bears, puma, semi trucks} until the next rut - and the cycle begins again.

Curious, intelligent, and playful, for a few pellets of food, they give so very much more in return. They're awsome!

That is very warm for this time of year, ul. All the Decembers I spent in Vienna were cold with wet slushy snow. Maybe that will come before new year.

Danon - you're right about the clicks. The site hasn't updated the number of clicks the actual AKTbird has made for several weeks - though I can see he's been there and clicked.

I wonder if this means the leaderboard needs a jump-start again.

A little cultural treat for you-

Apfelnikolo ( St. Nikolaus made out of an apple, a nut, and some paper). Each child made one today on St. Nikolaus. It seems we all have been good, because we found some sweets in our shoes. Nobody got a piece of coal. Very Happy

Hurray for a holiday tomorrow! Looong weekend.
So I have time to follow Christmas traditions:
baking cookies, wrapping up presents, writing letters, and inviting some kids from friends to the traditonal opera- Hänsel and Gretel.

( Photo is from last year's production-found it by google).

If only the weather were more like winter.

That looks like fun, ul. During our last visit Patti, our friend and I were given a tour of the backstage area at the Wiener Volksoper. It is really fascinating back there with the huge rotating floor area and the various levels from where things suddenly appear. Shocked Very Happy

Danon, just for fun

Volksoper and surrounding streets were used in a James Bond movie. The Living Daylights.
Kind of weird when my my neighborhood became Bratislava for a couple of days, all street signs were changed.
