I wonder how many pro-gun-freedom advocates have this opinion.

If abolishing gun ownership would stop all murder, I'd be the first on the bandwagon--but we know it won't.

Not I.

I acknowledge that I am highly skeptical that banning guns would save very many lives.

However, even if I knew it would save a million lives a year, the freedom is just more important.

I agree with that, Lash. At the same time, I've grown tired of a few pro-gun one trick ponies who think that the solution to violence is more guns in more places.

The more people can defend themselves, the more attacks will be warded off.

Ok kids, here's your lunch box and don't forget to bring your gun Rolling Eyes

Jean Shepherd had an interesting story about that.
He went to visit an old war buddy, in the Northwest,
whom he had not seen for several years.

Jean was welcomed by his wife n 12 year old son,
his friend being away at the time.
The boy offered to take him to a good fishing hole
in their Jeep. He threw a .45 cal. 1911 pistol into
the Jeep and got in. His mother came out of their house
and demanded: " Did u take your dad 's .45 pistol ? "

The boy sheepishly looked down and admitted that he had,
whereupon his mom screamed at him:
" How many times do I have to tell u ?
U
NEVER GO OUT THERE
WITH ANYTHING LESS THAN A .30-30 ??? "

Apparently she did not want her boy eaten
by the local fauna.

Northwest, as in Grizzly country?

A 30/30???

Shudder.

Wise mother though, despite the underpowered weaponry.

I'm gonna let you in on a big secret here. The 1911 would come closer to stopping a big bear than the 06 would although both are marginal. What you really want is a 44 mag pistol with heavy ammo or a Marlin lever action in 44 mag or, better, 45/70. Either one of those will drop a grizzly with one or two shots.

My first choice in warding off a large bear would be a double rifle in 470 nitro express.

At a saner price level would be the .458 Winchester magnum.

If that has too much recoil, I'd suggest a shotgun loaded with 3 inch magnum Brenneke slugs as the absolute minimum. The .450 Marlin would be about the same thing in a rifle format.

A pistol might work, but never rely on a pistol to stop a bear.

The Marlin lever action 45/70 is basically America's most lethal gun.

The .458 Winchester magnum and the .450 Marlin have the same bullet diameter but much more energy, and are American rounds.

The big Weatherbys are American too.

A 12-year-old could shoot it with mild ammo and the mildest ammo there is for a 45/70, i.e. a 300 grain bullet moving at about 1800 fps, will absolutely flatten anything to be found in North America.

If my life depended on being able to absolutely flatten the largest predators in North America, I'd try to master a .458 Winchester magnum.

I'd want a .450 Marlin or a shotgun/w 3 inch Brenneke slugs even if I had to face a mere black bear.

I guess this means you won't be visiting Canada in the future?

Good guess.
I can think of no reason to go there.

I was just across the border into Canada once.

I didn't like it. There is something just not right about a country that doesn't let its citizenry carry concealed handguns.

The people seemed nice though.

We were nice because we aren't paranoid. We don't have concealed handguns because of that.

Good luck finding ammo for it. I personally believe that the mildest (smokeless) ammo you'll ever find for a 45/70 would flatten any bear. Nonetheless, for those who don't buy into that, there's always Garrett...

http://www.garrettcartridges.com/420.asp

That stuff will let an ordinary Marlin 45/70 kill anything which walks the Earth now and most likely, anything which ever did walk the Earth, now or in past ages.

Then again, if that's still not enough and you don't think you could handle the recoil of Hans Rudel's 37mm flack gun, there's always this:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=123188

http://www.praxagora.com/lunde/shot2005/wwg-500-lever-5.jpg

available, apparently, in 50 SW and also 50 Alaskan. The 50 Alaskan would be far the better choice, being another low-pressure rifle round like the 45/70. The problem in trying to get rifle-like power from pistol cartridges like the Cassul or the 50 SW is pressure, which you don't really want in a true lever-action gun like the Marlin. Browning's lever guns of course are basically just bolt action rifles with a lever to turn and operate the bolt.

I cannot imagine packing a gun because someone might be waiting around the corner to attack me.

What happens when someone jumps you and they slit your throat and your blood is pouring out and suddenly you're dead and you've never had a chance to even think about your gun much less reach for it? What good was it then?

So basically you're carrying a gun 100% of the time for the infinitessimal chance of being attacked? The odds are so against you.

What a pointless thing to worry about.

Presumably because you're not afraid to leave the house armed to the teeth. Or not so afraid of your government or the United Nations or (fill in the blank) that you feel the need to stockpile armaments. Certain paranoiacs may find this unbelievable.

Much like their behavior appears to sane people.

I would much rather have a weapon and not use it then not have one and need it.

I find it odd that people would think otherwise.

You say Mauser
And I say Luger
You say Browning
And I say Ruger

Mauser, Luger, Browning, Ruger,
Let's call the whole thing off!
