If I won the lottery I would buy this silo and, using the beams from the falling-down barn behind it, turn it into...what? Any ideas? A recording studio? Artist's garret? Personal hidey-hole? Isn't it fabulous!

@Tai Chi,
Tai, baby face; you've got the cutest little baby face.

I would turn it into a small home for renting. Lots of folks used to buy old barns that make great adjunct dwellings. Income property is perfect for you.

This has been the summer of the snake. We have always had lots of garter snakes around but we've had interesting encounters with these two as well:

This is a Northern Ringneck snake. Before we replaced the floor we had one inside the schoolhouse! Luckily they're very shy and any of the ones we've seen are quite small. This summer we found one curled up under our front door mat.

This one is a juvenile fox snake:

They're harmless but vibrate their tails when upset which is a bit disconcerting.

Heading north again soon. I can't believe there's only a month left of summer. (We are going to get a summer, right? Before the leaves start to fall?) Taking up the wood stove this trip although we don't expect to get it installed. Have to build a hearth and figure out exactly where the holes need to be cut for the chimney.

Nifty photos, as usual.

I wonder what the story on this building is. That's the one I'd want to rebuild.

I love to see updates here. You've done great work Tai (Mr. Fix it too).
The ceiling is just so beautiful.

Yeah, buy the old silo and build something around it. The possibilities are
endless....

@Tai Chi,
A month of summer.

A month of Manitoulin.

Manitoulin's a wonderful place to spend a late summer. I hope you get that whole fireplace thing sorted. There are going to be some cool evenings - even with a college guy to snuggle with Cool

Finally got the wood stove moved up in August. Built a hearth out of 1/2 thickness bricks over cement board in a maple frame. There's a hole in the ceiling and the stove is all lined up but we decided to wait 'til spring to cut a hole in the roof. Mr. Fix-it wants to build a ladder to be permanently attached to the roof before he starts working up there (yay!).

Some of you may remember the saga of the cedar trees and how they had been planted for a contest. This summer we met a very nice couple who own the only other habitable schoolhouse still left in our original township. A family member had stumbled across this at the dump and they kept it for us until meeting us finally this May.

Hey osso, we got the stumps ground!

(You were right, though; there's still a low spot. Something else to deal with next summer!)

When the school house was originally "decommissioned" back in the 60's, somebody stacked all the desks in a big pile in the back forty and had a bonfire. We have been turning up half-buried cast iron desk ends ever since. Mr. Fix-it managed to re-create a desk for my aunt who retires from teaching soon.

@Tai Chi,
A sauna, Tai! Surprised Very Happy

This is turning into a very plush upgrade of a little school house! Wink

Seriously though, your little school house is just gorgeous! What an ambitious project!

You're amazing, really!

er ... (when you have a minute) ... any chance of a wee map, with a "this is the spot" type mark on it? I know it's somewhere in Canada, but ....
