I think it is a fear of recognizing it in themselves.
People quickly point the finger and assume rage when they think someone is "racist" or hateful in anyway..
People who are so willing to point that finger, and assume that angry posture, are having those racist hateful feeling themselves I think.
And the outward anger, and having a target gives them a sense of comfort and personal reassurance , ( they are not as bad as the accuser) and gives them a safe place to hide.
