Britain has moved to increase pressure on Israel over its West Bank settlements by advising supermarkets how to distinguish between produce from those settlements and Palestinian goods.

Stickers could read ‘Palestinian produce’ the Foreign Office advised.

UK shops told how to label Israeli food

From The Guardian, print edition, page 3:
Quote:
The most recent government figures suggest only about £800,000 of food products, about three-quarters of it olive oil ( below right), was imported from occupied Palestinian territories in the three years between 2006 and 2008.
Sainsbury’s, which sells dates and small amounts of basil and tarragon, welcomed “the greater clarity on how to label produce from occupied territories”.
“This allows us to fulfil our commitment of providing customers with clear and honest information about the origins of their food,” the supermarket chain said.“We have full traceability back to settlement and/or grower.”
Waitrose also said it would be following the guidance on the small number of West Bank lines it sold. “We source a small selection of herbs from the West Bank area, grown on two Israeli-managed farms, on which a Palestinian and Israeli workforce have worked side by side for many years,” said a spokesman.
“We are not motivated by politics. Instead our policy is to ensure high standards of farming and worker welfare on the farms from which we source. Our buyers … have visited the two farms in the West Bank to ensure that worker welfare meets the high standards that we insist on. As part of our normal sourcing policy we will be carrying out an audit on these farms in the next six months.”
This year the Co-op began selling Fairtrade olive oil from the West Bank " a move hailed by Gordon Brown, who said it meant British shoppers could help Palestinian farmers make a living.

Britain is just so angelic! Who would ever believe they once had colonies that they prospered from. It must be wonderful to have a selective memory when it comes to being self-righteous.

@Foxfyre,
Hi Foxfyre,
Historically we can make a connection between ww1 and ww2. The mane difference was the idea of the ''Supper race'' invented by a black haired brown eyed unattractive little man. I never understood how a little **** like Hitler, could crap on about a supper race, of big blond blue eyed people, and not just become a joke.
Anyway Palestine, has always had a mix of Jews, Christians, Muslims, living together. They never liked living together, but they did.
Palestine, was a British, colony, and the British, gave Palestine , independents for their help in ww2.
The Jews, turned up and with American, second world war tanks, guns, plains, and 'Money.
The Jews, took over, and this broke the balance of power ever since the world has had nothing but trouble. Only war can stop this, and America, should just stay out of their. of cause America, wont do this.
I have known many Jews, but only really liked one, and the same goes for Arab's. They are the same people. They look and think the same way.
Have you ever seen a lot of young Jewish, back packers. They all just love each other. Until it comes to shearing. Oh no that just does not compute for Jews, or Arabs. When they get hungry,you can not be diplomatic They just think of them self's. So how can they live in a small bit of desert. Well they can't and things will get worst as the desert dry's up. The best thing that could happen is Iran, getting the bomb. That will happen. The only worry I have about ww3, is I may not live long enough to see it.

Even axe murderers can come around, Foofie. Now speaking of selective memory, it seems almost a congenital disease for you.

Why do you so readily leap to the fore with your stunning hypocrisy? Have you no sense of how dumb you appear?

Hi Foofie
Thank you for informing me about Gordon Browns, idea of truth in labeling.
I never liked Brown'y ,but this is an about time good idea.I left the UK, twenty five years ago. When that old bag Thatcher, was closing every thing down.
I didn't know about this occupied Palestine, thing. I am sick of hearing how pore little Israel, is being attacked by terrorists, I am not anti Jew, just anti Israel, in Palestine.

You should stop all the compliments; I really do not deserve them all.

Complimenting me really adds nothing to any discussion, other than giving me a superiority complex perhaps.

Dardardit,

I did not say Gordon Brown; I said Britain.

You are not explaining why you have any interest in Arabs and Jewish Israelis.

Actually, I have never seen a lot of young Jewish backpackers. But, having seen other backpackers, I did think regardless of background they do like each other, since they have backpacking in common.

And, unless I am mistaken there is only one Zionist state called Israel on this planet. There are quite a few Arab Moslem states, I believe. So, if anyone is not sharing this planet with anyone else, it might be the Arabs. (The Arabs rioted against the Palestine Jews in the 1920's, before the State of Israel was established. A sharing attitude?)

Perhaps, you need to focus on less of your "feelings" towards Jews and Arabs, and focus more on a solution to the political situation in the Middle East. By the way, you show an interest in this topic because...?

@Foofie,
There was no mention of exported suicide bombers from the WB and Gaza. Had they lived, there would be deep resentment of the failure to mention them.

@Advocate,
Settlers burn Koran in mosque attack as reprisal for Israel's freeze on expension

Quote:
In the corner of the mosque a pile of ashes on a scorched carpet is all that remains of 100 holy books, Korans and copies of the Hadith " sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. On the tiled porch outside, the vandals left their calling card, a graffiti message in Hebrew that reads: “Price tag " greetings from Effi”.

... ... ...

There have been rising tensions since Binyamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister, announced the proposed freeze last month. Thousands of angry settlers gathered for a demonstration close to the Israeli Prime Minister’s residence in Jerusalem this week, vowing to continue building and condemning the decision to bow to pressure from President Obama. They carried banners that said “Obama wants us frozen, God wants us chosen” and “God’s Bible gave us this land”.

The settlers believe that the West Bank " which they call by the biblical name of Judaea and Samaria " should be part of a greater Israel and are adamantly opposed to a Palestinian state. They have torn up freeze orders delivered by the Israeli authorities to settlements in the West Bank and blocked inspectors trying to enforce the building ban. Last week at the settlement of Qedumim, close to Nablus, residents prevented inspectors from entering while cheering as trucks of building materials were brought in.

A right-wing Cabinet minister said that the freeze was largely a sham and that the settler population could grow by as many as 3,000 in the next ten months, the period of the proposed moratorium. “This is neither a freeze nor a suspension,” Benny Begin, the son of the former Prime Minister Menachem Begin, told a conference in Tel Aviv, according to an Israeli newspaper. “Construction in Judaea and Samaria will continue in the next ten months. We are . . . saying that we don’t intend to restrict or suspend new building permits.”

You sure do deserve the ones that point out what an incredible hypocrite you are. Chastising others for having a selective memory, you are truly a laugh and a half.

@Advocate,

From the One Free World International homepage:

Quote:
One Free World International (OFWI) is an international human rights organization based in Toronto, Canada, that focuses on the rights of religious minorities around the world and promotes tolerance, understanding and respect for diverse religious belief.
[...]
Our primary focus is on combating the persecution of Christians and anti-semitism and we assist all those whose religious freedom is threatened, regardless of their beliefs. OFWI is based on and guided in its work by Christian principles. ... ... ...

So, every three minutes a Christian is being tortured in the Muslim world, and in 2009 more than 165,000 Christians will have been killed because of their faith in Muslim countries ... according to the JP article.

That certainly will add quite a lot of saints to the actual list of saints.

A British court (Westminster Magistrate Court) isued an arrest warrant for Israel's former foreign minister Tzipi Livni over war crimes allegedly committed in Gaza this year " only to withdraw it when it was discovered that she was not in the UK, it emerged today .

The warrant marks the first time an Israeli minister or former minister has faced arrest in the UK, and is evidence of a growing effort to pursue war crimes allegations under so-called "universal jurisidiction".

Considering Britain was the architect, in some people's opinion, of the modern state of Israel, they expected the Arabs to get along with the Jews? An ethics professor could likely make an argument for Britain having an historical involvement with what has occurred presently. Or, possibly Britain sees itself as a modern day Pontius Pilate and above reproach?
