That type of propaganda should be expected regardless of who's sitting in the oval office. Usually warring Nations try their best to dehumanize the enemy completely. The less sympathy you have for your enemy; the easier war is to swallow. With your knowledge of history, Bob, you could probably exemplify this point better than I could.

The slide from 'is' to 'ought' here is how justification commonly gets achieved. It's not excuseable in the behavior of leaders, nor in the facile acceptance by citizens. Improvements in governance don't come about through "well, it's always been thus" or "others do it too".

I agree with you completely from a philosophical standpoint, blatham... My use of the term propaganda "exemplifies" () this. I was just being realistic.

Kind of an unusual application of exemplify, but it works.

I agree that hobitbob could probably illustrate, by providing examples, the point you were making about the government not wanting people to sympathize with the enemy, O'Bill.

I do think that enough of the American public was doubtful about the suggestion that the Iraqi doctors had badly mistreated their patients, that it would probably have been better to admit the truth earlier. Americans could probably still have mustered plenty of hatred for the Iraqi government without being fed lies about the Iraqi doctors who treated Ms. Lynch.

I will lose any debate over my mastery of the English Language. For instance; I don't even understand Setanta's response. Question I would consider it a favor if my fellow A2Kers would follow ehBeth's example and forgive any inconsequential errors in my grammar, and address the point.

Unfortunately, I am even less skilled in the methodology of propaganda, so I would have no clue how best to implement it. I will say that I understand when our leaders use it to garner support for our soldiers from the average American, who probably have no real clue about Iraq in the first place.

I was addressing the point, Bill, and in fact, agreeing with you, obliquely . . .

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

is a French expression which means "The more it changes, the more it's the same thing," although it is usually translated (through the pernicious influence of our Angle-ish friends) "The more things change, the more they stay the same." I warn't dissin' ya, Boss, i war making the observation that the both of you are right.

I didn't think you were dissin me Sent. I was just taking the advantage of the opportunity to ask you what you meant. Killing 2 birds with one stone, so to speak. My passive aggressive undertones were intended for someone higher on the page. I've never seen you childishly insult anyone.

Don't think that means i haven't, Bill, nor that i might not succumb in future, but you are very kind. We had a regular poster for a long time, CodeBorg, whom i have not seen of late. His manner was so scrupulously courteous, even in the face of paltry comments, that it shamed me to think i could not accomplish something so simple myself. Simple things are all too often the most difficult of accomplishment.

O'Bill - may I suggest one of my favourite sites - the Merriam-Webster online. I normally am an Oxford-only person, but the M-W online is free (which is an instant sale for me), and it's saved me several times - in blood-thirsty word games and political discussions here.

I'll admit that when I first saw you suggest that hobitbob could exemplify dehumanizing the enemy, I thought you were using another definition of exemplify, and prepared quite a tart response.

Cheers, and happy new year, O'Bill!

I offer my apologies hobitbob, if that was the impression my choice of words were sending. Embarrassed I most certainly did not intend to imply anything other than that you were knowledgeable about history. I wondered why you responded in such an insulting way. Of course, you just did again, so who knows. Rolling Eyes Happy New Year to you and everyone! Laughing

Jessica Lynch "said yesterday the Pentagon inaccurately portrayed her as a "little girl Rambo", firing her weapon down to the last bullet before being captured.

"It was not true ... I'm still confused as to why they choose to lie and try to make me a legend," she told the Congress hearing."

The only thing this administration appears to be able to do well is lie.

I dun'no. The keep getting caught with some regularity. It's kind of like the Watergate guy, G. Gordon Liddy, if I recall. Bungled a third rate burglary, got out of jail, and opened some sort of school for spies.
