Do you think there is pure friendship between men and women?

For a topic that tends to be talked to death...I found some interesting thoughts in the thread...and the words of some old friends. By the way, does all of this apply to folks over 65? I swear, sometimes I believe I have the mind of a 20 year-old.

without humor or wit or sexual tension, most conversation feels like waiting for death.

i've never had any sort of real friendship with any woman with whom there was not some sort of undercurrent (since humor and wit are flicking dead sexy), even if sex was never going to happen.

I can read Benedict Anderson rather well myself. And it's much quicker. A man that attempts to read anything to me, especially bible or poetry or somesuch nonsense, is a dead meat.

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down
If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best and it ain't no lie
If you put me to the test, if you let me try

Take a chance on me
(That's all I ask of you honey)
Take a chance on me

We can go dancing, we can go walking, as long as we're together
Listen to some music, maybe just talking, get to know you better
'Cos you know I've got
So much that I wanna do, when I dream I'm alone with you
It's magic
You want me to leave it there, afraid of a love affair
But I think you know
That I can't let go

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down
If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best and it ain't no lie
If you put me to the test, if you let me try

Take a chance on me
(Come on, give me a break will you?)
Take a chance on me
Oh you can take your time baby, I'm in no hurry, know I'm gonna get you
You don't wanna hurt me, baby don't worry, I ain't gonna let you
Let me tell you now
My love is strong enough to last when things are rough
It's magic
You say that I waste my time but I can't get you off my mind
No I can't let go
'Cos I love you so

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down
If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can't you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
(Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me)

Ba ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba ba baa
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can't you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
(Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me)

Ba ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba ba baa ba-ba
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me

I hate when that happens.

soooo, the pure friendship thing.

I can't imagine having a conversation with a man without recognizing that he's a man. I think there's always some kind of undercurrent of awareness, which I also think is good and healthy.

Doesn't mean a sexual interest, just a lovely "fizz" of awareness.

why do I get the impression Dag would just be a no holds barred throwdown in the proper circumstances? Good times, not shy and lots o' toys welcome I bet.

Those are high words of praise coming from the Bear btw.

Every once in a while I'll pull out the CD that I burned the MP3 of that song onto, put it on a thumb drive, take it to work and listen to it over the course of a week or so. Kind of like a radio station putting a song on heavy rotation.

That's a great song, and ABBA were a great pop group.

Non-sexual relationships possible and desirable
As is often the case, I agree with Sozobe. Yes, non-sexual relationships between men and women are definitely possible--and, in my case, deep but platonic relationships with a number of women friends have been and continue to be among the most important in my life. I realize that generalizations can be invidious, but I consistently find that women tend to be more empathetic, more circumspect, and just plain better communicators than most guys. I do have long-term close male friendships--in some cases extending back nearly 60 years--but there seem, even over such a long period of time, to be many more women than men who have had an interest in taking conversation beyond the how-bout-those-Red-Sox level. Nimh pointed at this issue.
I do have one caveat for men who want to be close friends with a woman: if one or both of you are already in significant romantic relationships with someone else, go SLOWLY. There seems to come a point in the natural evolution of a male-female relationship at which the ego barriers drop on both sides (necessary for deep communication), and, when this happens, both need to acknowledge DIRECTLY that, yeah, this could have been a romance under very different circumstances, but what we have now is NOT going in that direction. However it's still going to be close--and good. If you do not defuse this natural sexual fantasy, there can be big trouble; feelings WILL be hurt.
My wife has close male friends other than me; this is no more a problem for me than my having close female friends is for her. Some inidividuals are very close, non-sexual friends of both of us; however, we tend to have our deepest conversation when alone singly with these friends. Jealousy has never arisen in 39 years of marriage. We both firmly believe that we cannot be all things to each other, except sexually (one vow on which our marriage is based).
As a guy who taught school for 30 years--at one time or another, in everything from 4th grade to post-grad classes--I know for certain that men and women think differently from go; they have different takes on the same subjects; and these differences make for great conversations--the kind in which I learn--and, I hope, my women friends learn. Good conversation, for me, is a two-way street filled with fresh visions and intellectual passions and novel information. And, of course, if a man occasionally is interested in intelligent feedback on emotional issues, who's better equipped than a close, platonic female friend? Women, generally, seem to be much more articulate in discussing emotions than most men. Hey, women seem much more articulate on most any topic! This is just the way people are pre-wired: women NEED to be more circumspect, more verbal, better at complex negotiations and compromises. We men seem inclined to just jump in there to "fix stuff"--and as quickly as possible. This hard-wired desire is probably why I play competitive tennis at an age when I don't bounce so well anymore when I fall. It scratches that guy itch. But most of my male tennis friends are not going to kick back after a few sweaty sets and talk about art, movies, politics, children, elder care. They probably could, but they seem naturally disinclined. Close women friends, by contrast, like to talk about all kinds of surprising and interesting topics. I feel VERY lucky to have a few such female friends.

Yes there definately is pure friendship between the sexes. All of my best friends have been guys. I've helped them when they've needed advice on girls. Most of the guys I hang out with dont really treat me like a girl because they are that comfortable with me. That is pure friendship. And one friend treats me like a sister.
