MY WORKPLACE SUCKS!!!!!!!!

Reply Sat 15 Apr, 2006 06:56 am
Sucks I tell you... the worst...unbearable.... it takes every bit of effort I can muster to stay there all day... and the thing is... there are 25 associates working the floor and EVERY SINGLE ONE feels the same way..... I realize I need to consider that I'm aging out of playing live for a living but it's tempting to hit it hard full time again.....

Sales sucks, IMO. I don't understand the mental or emotional make-up of a person, who actually likes what is effectively begging people to spend money. I'm not surprised you don't like it--and I'm actually glad you don't! Smile I think most people loathe the job, but they do it because the pay-off has the potential to be significantly better than a job their skills can command on the market. Most of the time, though, I think it evens out to a little over minimum wage--stretched out over a year. And, it's unreliable. Moreso, the most productive ones are the most deceptive, manipulative, dishonest, backstabbing sonsobitches that ever crawled across the earth.

I would guess approximately 1% of salespeople actually like what they do. (See: "crawled across the earth")

Unsolicited advice: Go to school, even a tech school, in a field you have a talent or affinity for.

At least try. You may make within the range (with the boys as dependants) that you can get financial aid.

Even a certificate to enable you to demand a bit higher wage would get you off a salesfloor and doing something you can live with. You can parlay that into more classes, better jobs... The boys will learn something incredibly valuable from you. That would really be the biggest payoff. Plus, they're about to need expensive help.

If that doesn't work, a basic fulltime job with a steady income for the family, plus online classes would be another option.

Once you get a plan of action toward a goal that excites you, don't let anything take you off track!

I'm hoping the best for you.

I think your hospitalization may be a glaring indicator that the fulltime gig route is hazardous to your health. Your family needs you to make a wise decision.

Best wishes and pre-emptive, well meaning, pseudo-apology for nose too deep in business....

Very smart advice, Lash.

I also agree that sales jobs suck big time. Bluevein, you're 8 to 10 hours in that furniture store and might not make a dime, as you work on commission only. This is a frustrating, waste-of-time consuming job, and the turn over in places like these proves the point.

You'd probably make more money giving guitar lessons
to children.

I'm a very good salesperson. I've made a lot of money doing it. Salespeople are not beggars, nor are they deceptive or manipulative or any of the horrible things you attribute to them, not all of them anyway. I just happen to hate where I am. And I don't know any sales professionals who make close to minimum wage.

I'm a very good salesperson.

Just wanted you to realize nothing I said contradicts that statement.

I've made a lot of money doing it.

That is great. It's not the average story, but good for you.

Salespeople are not beggars, nor are they deceptive or manipulative or any of the horrible things you attribute to them, not all of them anyway.

If you'll look back, I "attribute [...] the horrible things" to the top 1%. And, I assert, after time, the rest are miserable. I also worked sales and knew 35-45 salespeople. I saw what the successful ones did, and knew how everyone felt about the job.

I just happen to hate where I am. And I don't know any sales professionals who make close to minimum wage.

Over time, with slumps, seasons and new store openings in the area, commission averages down. But, if you don't fall in any of these categories, I'm happy for you.

So does mine, but only because of one person - my boss. There is only one in the group that can stand him - the joke around the office is that he must have had inhuman bosses in the past.

I completely disagree with your take on sales, Lash. I don't see it as begging people to spend their money. They're gonna spend it, no matter what. Good salespeople help them decide the best way to spend it.

Haven't you ever had a favorite salesperson? At the cosmetics counter? In a clothing store? Someone who knew your taste and made buying a pleasure for you? That's the way it's supposed to be.

Sure, there are bad sales jobs, just like there are bad jobs in every field. And bad salesmen, too, just like there are bad teachers, bad policemen, bad whatever.... It's bad when you don't believe in your product, or don't genuinely want to help people make the best choice.

My father spent many years in sales (retired early), and I grew up around salesmen. Most of them liked their jobs and were good at them. (Actually, I don't think you CAN be good at it without enjoying it.) All the jobs I had through highschool and college involved sales. And what I do now...public relations...is just a fancy way of saying selling. I make companies and people look good. I sell through print and images.

A wise college professor I once had taught a course on "Salesmanship." On the first day, he told everyone in the class that if they ever wanted anything out of life, they'd have to learn to sell. You want to get a job someday? You'll have to sell yourself. You want to get married? Then you'll have to do a REALLY GOOD job of selling yourself. And if you want to stay married...? Well now!!!

I'm sorry you had bad experiences working in sales, Lash. But that doesn't mean everyone does.
My husband, for instance, has an engineering background and works in technical sales. He makes very good money, and I couldn't imagine a job that would suit him better. He gets to travel, meet new people all the time, figure out solutions to their problems, and implement those solutions. (He's a fixer.) Plus, he gets to learn about all kinds of businesses, so it's continually interesting to him.

Plus, good salespeople are just plain fun to be around! One of the best I ever knew was hired by a company to promote their pizza restaurants. Her business card listed her name with the title "Queen of Fun." It fit her.
