Confused hmmmm. so let me get this straight.... Apparently they don't have a problem with not having blinds. You do. So... why should they get blinds and not you? I don't think them moving in later, after you've already moved in, has any decisive power in a matter like this. Shrug. Dunno, it seems like an easy solution to me. I don't like problems, so I would have gotten blinds long ago if I had an issue like this.

I already tried that line of reasoning, Dag. It didn't work. (Sigh.)

Speaking on kick's behalf, which he has no need of, he apparently can't walkabout nekkid with his blinds semi open (letting light in) lest little children be affected. This is true in my living room too.

It looks like I could walk nekkid out in my back yard... but I am so used to being careful I don't trust it. There is an airforce base nearby here, you know.

If I don't see some blinds or drapes going up soon, it's going to be time for me to pull out the razor and shave my balls right in front of the window.

Dude, do it

do it

it's the only real way to go now.

Forget embarassment and psychological problems on your part. It's their problem, not your problem.

Other idea - throw a bunch of paint over their window.

Are either of you paying any attention to the conversation at all?

These windows are the only source of outside light in my whole apartment. The only view I have of the outside world. I like to have the blinds open sometimes. Not all the time. Just sometimes. I don't know how many times I have to explain this. It gets a little gloomy with the blinds up ALL THE TIME. Are you saying you would be happy living in a place with NO OUTSIDE LIGHT AT ALL?

there is no light at night. you can keep them open during the day. i thought you wanted people's opinions. if you just want to complain, go right ahead and i won't even peek in any more.

Can't blame a giant blue hand for trying to get a piece. Even if it does look like a feathered fan to me.

Kicky, don't let their actions become YOUR problems. Open your windows, all the time. If they have a problem with it, they can change their lives.

...not to mention that one of their problems might be wanting some outside light just as bad as you do...

Get a pool table.
Put it in the middle of the living room.
Place beverages and snacks at strategic intervals around the perimeter.
Go out on the town and hook up with the wildest creature you can locate.
Place her in the middle of the pool table.
Hop onto the pool table as well.
Touch her face gently, look deeply into her eyes and tell her firmly in no uncertain terms: "hot-cold, fast-slow, deep-shallow, pain-pleasure, love-hate; it's you, me and the weird neighbors for the next 6 hours"!!

Yes, you are right. How selfish of me to want them to go out and get some drapes or curtains or blinds, like normal people who live in cities do...like I did. Yes, they should shoulder none of the burden of privacy at all, while I should wall myself in like a hermit so that they may enjoy all the outside light at all times. Yes, that makes perfect sense. Thank you for clearing that up for me.

Sorry, I just can't believe you're actually making this point seriously. You are messing with me, right?

Of course not! But then, I have no desire to live in an apartment in NYC where my windows are 7' from the neighboring building!

What, did you just figure out the next building was that close?! Was there a gorgeous view of trees and clouds out there before these particular people moved in? Wasn't that building right outside your window all the time?

Sorry, I just don't get it. What do you expect...some kind of contract where each of you will alternate hours closing your blinds so the other can open theirs? Seems to me that no matter who lives there, even if they have blinds, you'll still have to close yours lots of times when theirs are open.

Maybe there's some sort of Manhattan "window blind etiquette" that I'm not following.

Sheesh. You wanna live that close to people, but you don't expect to see 'em. Go figure...

both of you should have blinds. whoever's bothered at the moment, pulls them down. whatever. but it just does not seem they care at all. shrug. not much you can do about that.

This is what I have during the day:

Sheer enough to let all the sunlight through, but not let people see inside. At night I draw regular drapes. Easy.

Kicky, I hope I can explain this so you get the visual. Forget the blinds. To create privacy and still get light, I suggest you get one of those curtain rods that suctions between the window frames (it has little rubber ends and adjusts by turning it to make it tighter or looser). Get a simple curtain you can't see through. Position the rod and curtain about 1/4 from the top of the window. I mean that the top 1/4 of the window is left uncovered. This allows for light to come in, but the only thing the neighbors might be able to see is your head when you walk by.

As I said before - the Hasidic are very good at ignoring what they do not wish to see. Odds are they will not get window coverings. If you misbehave or put on a show they will only feel more convinced that they are going to a greater glory and you are not.

This is the real thing. As you can see, their windows are right there. It never was an issue - neither for them, nor for me. And that's my bedroom/study/everything we're talking about.

Thank you. That is all you needed to say. I don't care about a word you said after that. Thanks for the lecture, but please, the next time you feel like telling me how dumb I am, just go rant into your bathroom mirror for a few minutes. We'll both feel better.

There was nobody in the building when I moved in, and it looked like it was going to be under construction for a while. It had been gutted and was being renovated. It didn't look like it was going to be a residential building. I thought it was going to be some type of office building when it was going up. Now would you kindly get off my ass?

Yes, I think there is some sort of etiquette in every social situation in life. In fact, I think that might be one of the things that separates us from the apes. Well, most of us, at least.
