We're leaving tomorrow to spend a week or so with the hamburgers, so I worked a bit late, realized I'd miss belly dance class, passed two ugly car accidents on the way home ... staggered in the door, wondering what we'd be eating.

well, just before I staggered in, I stopped to sing "a belated happy birthday to you" to my next door neighbour, and talk for a coupla minutes.

a few minutes after I got in, and heard Set's updates of the day's adventures, there was a ruckus at the door ... dogs frantic ... it was Uncle Joe from next door (he's only 10 months older than I am, but ...) ... his mother wanted him to tell me that she was sending something special over with red sauce. He didn't know the whole story, something about the dogs and Setanta and a party they were at next door a week or so ago.

Then another 10 minutes later, Uncle Joe was back with a PLATTER. About 2 pounds of spaghetti, homemade red sauce with jumbo homegrown basil leaves and a big whack of freshly grated grana padano on top, with two fried fish (if those were fillets, the original fish were enormous). Uncle Joe says "there's cheese on there", hands me the platter and disappears.

I stagger back in - that platter was heavy! Set and I polished off the fish and about a quarter of the noodles and red sauce. The dogs got a handful of noodles and sauce cut into their dental kibble and broth. We packed the spare noodles into the fridge, and Set went next door to give Nonna a kiss and a thank you and a clean platter.

<sigh>

That was marvellous. The herbs in the sauce were so BRIGHT and peppery and fresh.

Are your neighbours looking for someone to feed while you're out of town?

Turkey sausages and potato salad.

Gonna roast some peppers, onion, garlic, and mushrooms, throw in the leftover turkey sausage and serve with pasta.

It worked out really well, osso. When the vegetables had cooked down a bit I threw in a can of diced tomatoes with the sliced sausage and some oregano and let it cook down as well. It was really tasty -- of course roasting an entire head of garlic didn't hurt.

So tonight we grilled chicken breast and I fried up cold cooked potatoes with onion and tossed a salad. I know it's a holiday weekend but am I the only drudge cooking?

You're not alone Tai Chi. I made soup today- my favorite roasted vegetable. I roasted a butternut squash, a red pepper, a fennel bulb, an onion, some carrots, tomatoes and a whole head of garlic. After the veggies got soft and caramelly, I put them into some vegetable broth and cooked them some more Puree the whole mess and serve with a dollop of yogurt. Love it, especially on cool, rainy days like today.

Sounds like a great vegetable soup, Swimpy. It's too hot for soup here,
we're having in about 10 minutes turkey tornadoes wrapped in bacon
and couscous, with a salad beforehand.

That sounds really good,Swimpy. Yeah, it's getting cool here (and we're getting the tail end of Ernesto too, so rainy as well). I'm not trying to rush autumn weather but it's nice to be able to cook something in the oven instead of living on salads and grilled meats done on the BBQ all the time.

(Computer's owner just got home; guess I'm logging out now Crying or Very sad )

No, you're not the only one Tai Chi.

We made a big batch (12) of veal parmesan and chicken parmesan (6) for dinner, with homemade sauce, parmesan and mozzarella cheese. I have 14 portions left for the deep freeze. Yay!!

Tonight, served with oven-browned potatoes and fresh asparagus.

Fall is coming!

Didn't feel like eating yesterday. So dinner was 3 rum and cokes and a big packet of crisps...

Cheese tortellini in a deep bowl of chicken broth with a big handful of greens thrown in to wilt at the very last minute. (A hang-over from my experiments with Asian soups. Nice touch!)
