@Dutchy,
Ok, I saved that..
it reminds me somewhat of the italian torta di mele I do (have the apples ready and waiting as we speak). Somewhat, except the torta isn't fried, and there is no yeast in it. (Oh, never mind)

@ossobuco,
We call it "Apfelkuechel" in German - same thing though.
Dutchy, you eat that traditionally on New Year's Eve?
@CalamityJane,

Yes we do CalamityJane but it is extended over the whole evening with the necessary 'refreshments'. Friends usually bring the same stuff so we have a variety of different shapes and tastes. Happy New Year to you all, we're well into the last day of the year.
@Dutchy,
tonight was pork tenderloin that Set cooked in a large casserole with apples, fingerling potatoes, onions and v-8
tasty tasty
I grilled a couple of small steaks while the pork was in the oven. We'll use them to make a sort of shredded steak fajita lasagna tomorrow night.
For tonight I'm contemplating slow roasted soy & honey (& various other Asian flavourings) pork. With maybe some steamed broccolini (which I tried for the first time recently. Love it!) & rice. Or maybe something else ...? I'd better make up my mind soon & get myself off to the shops!
a little chilly here today, so i made a nice turkey stew, yum
Happy new Year Olga and everyone - today I'm making tomato soup - don't know why, just feel like it
@Endymion,
And a good one to you, too, Endy!
You can get fresh, tasty tomatoes in the UK in the middle of winter?
Ours taste like pulp & it's supposed to be tomato season!
@msolga,
we invented the cheese and tomato sandwich, Olga - tomatoes can be picked up all year round
@Endymion,
So, I suppose it's freezing still, Endy? (Soup time!) I read the news reports about folk out celebrating in London despite the incredible cold. (Never could figure out why people feel the need to congregate in large numbers in public places to stand around & "celebrate" the new year. In Oz they most appear to be drunk! - maybe
that's the attraction?

)
@msolga,
It's so bloody cold - they have to drink alcohol to keep warm
I'm cracking open a bottle of wine today (nothing grand, but one of my favorites - ) Probably add a dash to the soup
So anyway, here's to you, Olga - and many more
speak to you later
e
Short ribs in the crock pot with PC "Memories of Thailand" sauce (an asian-inspired sauce with lots of chilies). Will steam some veggies and serve it all on basmati rice.
@Tai Chi,
It might be a pizza day... the dough's already made and in the freezer. If so, some mozzarella, fontina, garlic bits, hot italian sausage, cut up artichoke quarters. cut up olives, slivered red onion. Glass of red plonk to go with that.
@ossobuco,
no dinner tonight !!!
had a great new year's brunch in a restaurant overlooking lake ontario - perhaps a little snack later on .
Leftovers from a new year eves party.
These were some of the hits.
A guest brought empinadas.(my first one) Chicken, and ground beef. The dough was perfect, flaky, just great.
Barbequed skewered pork tenderloin pieces with pineapple and red pepper. Garlic, soy, serrano, pineapple peanut butter dipping sauce. I didn't care for the peanut butter base dipping sauce, but, it was a hit.
Calamari salad.
Homemade hame and cheese croissants
Still have a crock pot full of sloppy joe. (hangover back up food). That will be the Libery and Sugar bowl game grub.
I attended a Japanese New Years party yesterday with moshi cakes, lotus root, sushi, sashimi and other Japanese delicacies. An American woman brought some chocolate chip cookies. The Japanese are not famous for their deserts.
