Hey, Gang:

My sweetheart and I will be entertaining at my new place and serving vegetarian chili this weekend. She has her heart set on serving this white bean dip as part of an appetizer spread, but I think that's way too many ******* beans for one night.

Any suggestions for cold, gray weather, chili-compatible appetizers? I'm looking forward to fixing something I've never attempted.

@CalamityJane,
Guacamole is a good idea.

Though as far as libations go, we'll be serving some fine wines we shipped back from our California trip.

@Gargamel,
I love guacamole, but also love white bean dip...

reminds me of the time I made homemade hummus for an office party. One guy stood by the bowl and single handedly ate most of it.. and it was a pretty big bowl. He had complaints the next time I saw him.

@ossobuco,
Yeah bean dip is good too, osso, however, in making a good impression with
the in-laws, he might abstain from too many beans.

Remember the episode with Drew Carey where he ate the bean curd cake
and had to go to a meeting afterwards....best laugh I had in years!

@CalamityJane,
We were at the Royal Winter Fair yesterday. Lots of fun food, food sampling, and food giveaways. My last meal yesterday was a sampling of an excellent Blackcurrant Rye beer and a nice pan of rosti.

@Gargamel,
Mr. G, how about a small salad that you can serve into edible endive leaves?

@CalamityJane,
The Blackcurrant Rye beer was very good. It's a lager from a small brewery near the hamburgers. I'm going to try and get some the next time I visit them.

@hamburger,
Do you buy your rabbit at the store Hamburger? I don't think I ever see it here...

We are having salad again. But I am doing a fried chicken salad, with boiled eggs and scallions, romaine, and spring mix a little bacon and honey mustard dressing. Easy and yummy - I am making a small pot of potato soup to go with it.

@Gargamel,
Hello Gargamel. This is a great, simple recipe.
Olive/Cheese balls
Drain a jar of small to medium spanish green olives. Set aside.
Combine two cups flour, one cup shredded cheddar cheese (sharp, or mild), two tablespoons of butter, dash of salt and pepper. One tablespoon of cayenne pepper. (If it is really grey and cold, make it two tablespoons) One tablespoon of worcestershire sauce. Mix all ingredients.
Take a pinch of the dough flatten in palm of hand, add dry olive, form dough over olive making round shape. Roll in the palm of your hands until it is nice, tight, and round.
Bake in a four hundred degrre oven for twelve to fourteen minutes.

@Gargamel,
Gargamel,

Cornbread with jalapenos. You can do it as muffins, even. It goes great with chili.

Of late, lobster had been priced very reasonably at our local "Market Basket", so
we've treated ourselves several times.

Alas, the price is starting to rise again, so The Lovely Bride bought some
yesterday and we had lobster with drawn butter. It may be a while before we
have "bugs" again. Heavy sigh.

@George,
Hello George. I'll be right over.
Do you bake, broil, or boil the lobsters? Ever stuff?

OK, we'll set an extra plate.

The Lovely Bride boils the lobsters. She has an incredible knack for getting
them just right. Occasionally she will make Lobster Cantonese, which involves
cutting the bugs up and cooking them in a wok.

She's never made baked stuffed lobster. Back when we had actual disposable
income, we would order it in our favorite (at the time) seafood restaurant.
