msolga got me thinking about bangers and mash, so tonight it's pork-and-apple sausage with mashed potatoes and a big tossed multi-coloured tomato salad with feta and kalamata olives.

Found a nice fish & chip shop on my way home tonight. A real old fashioned one, not one of those pretend ones that sell the tasteless, boring varieties. What a find, I thought! At last! So I bought a minimum of chips, piece of flake & two potato cakes. Then sat on the back verandah when I got home & indulged. Delicious!
One small problem: now (a few hours later) I feel like I've eaten a brick! I feel disgustingly full! Not a good feeling!
So that's my fix of fish & chips for 2007. Tomorrow I'm back to healthy!

I had one of those "lived to regret it" moments last night, msolga. I'd cooked beef short ribs on a bed of onion, celery and carrots for hours in the crock pot. Everything was drowned in a bottled cooking sauce -- "President's Choice Memories of Thailand" -- a sort of chili sauce (the fiery orange-red one with the seeds floating around found in asian food stores, not the tomato-based one that grandma used to make). They were delicious over mashed potatoes, but by the end of the meal my mouth was on fire. Dessert was arrowroot cookies broken into pieces and placed on my tongue to dissolve and absorb some heat!

I think I'll stick to a simple salad tonight -- maybe with a little feta cheese for excitement.

I made a soup last night - kitchen soup - with carrots, celery, chopped red swiss chard stems, and scallion slices sauteed in olive oil, then 3 cloves of garlic chopped and sauteed with the rest, then chicken stock, then three grated red potatoes, torn chard leaves, "italian spices", pepper; tasted it after it simmered down, fine.

Tonight I'll add fresh chicken apple sausage while reheating the pot.

Soon, soon.

Tai chi, those short ribs sounded great. So did the goulash.. Hmmmm.

Setanta roasted the beef with apples and onions and lime juice - mmmm tasty! I've been digging out all of the apple segments from the casserole dish to eat.

We had some Royal Galas in the kitchen.

Set probably doesn't realize it, but he's created a variant of mrs. hamburger's family's sweet and sour liver dish. Very Prussian.

That sounds good too.

I was raised with liver as vile shoeleather, but I've had it since in dishes I've liked..

Thinking autumnal... (it's not very autumnal here yet).

And I added some refrigerator-dried Monterey Jack cheese and a couple of sliced marinated peperoncini to that soup, besides the fresh sausage. Good, had a large bowl full.

Last night, meatloaf, broccoli, mashed potatoes, lettuce, tomato & cucumber salad, dinner rolls. Tonight, hubby had meatload and I had roasted chicken from Friday.
We're tightening our food budget as well.

We had risotto - I made it. Such an inexpensive and wonderful food. I even tried to make it expensive, used real arborio rice, EVOO, red onion, white wine, homemade chicken stock, real parmesan cheese, butter...

I think the huge pan of it I made probably cost $6 total and fed six people with some chicken and peas on the side. Somewhere around $2/plate...

Made sort of a cross between chicken pot pie and shepherd's pie -- needed to use up some vegetables -- so a thick chicken stew in a casserole topped with mashed potatoes. And since the oven was on, cranberry-apple crumble. The house smells great!
