It seems, I think, some "propaganda" already reached one aim, namely attraction ... ... ... and 'education':

From the Roper poll for the National Geographic (here copied/pasted from today's Chicago Tribune, page 3)

That Roper poll, I wonder who they polled? Since it appeared in the Chicago Tribune, I suspect they polled the Chicagoland area. Chicago is one of the most unarmed cities in America, at least for law abiding citizens. They are also one of the most spied upon. So to them a camera or listening device is "heavily fortified".

Of course I could be wrong, but it's an educated guess.

Precisely the model I envision, Walter. Neither Canadians nor Mexicans are our foe, nor will they be in the foreseeable future unless we completely lose our collective mind. Securing the borders in a country the size of ours is a pipe-dream. I know no one who understands the expense involved AND wants to contribute their fair share to implement it. Even if we did... 20 well funded terrorists with the patience to plan could repeat September 11th anyway... quite easily actually.

This whole thing strikes me as more political foolishness, where fools will get elected promising to do things to please the ignorant masses that actually help them not in the least. Bigotry and selfishness predominate the arguments... and misguided selfishness at that. Our country benefits with each and every productive addition to our population. The path to enrichment doesn't run through restrictions on your competition. 4 billion people who can't make a living wage are 4 billion people who can't buy your services or products, whatever they may be. Holding them down is in no one's best interest, save the oppressors of same.

Wow. I'm completely with Occom Bill. Who would have thought?

There's another thing about doing away with borders... If we are scared that we might be "flooded" with immigrants when we open our borders, but determined to do so nevertheless, that leaves us another good alternative: helping to improve the conditions in our neighboring countries. After all, if the conditions "there" would be comparable to the conditions "here", why would millions of people move? For example, if the US-Canadian border would disappear tomorrow, would America be "flooded" by Canadian immigrants? I doubt it.

Does Canada allow Americans to just move in and set up shop without going through due process? Does Mexico? I think not. We recently extradited a local murderer from Mexico. He was arrested there for being there illegally and would have stayed in jail for up to two years for that crime.

Why is it okay for them to have rules and regulations about who can be in their countries legally, but it's somehow unfriendly or combative for us to have rules and regulations about who can be in our country legally?

Damn, Walter, you should have known that! Don't trust anyone who's not carrying a gun! There's a direct link between geographical knowledge and willingness to wield a weapon.

For example, take a look at Iraq. All those insurgents, coming from all over the Middle East, just to kill people in Iraq. Do you really think they would have found that country in the first place if they were inclined to throw flowers and sing happy songs instead of shooting people? No way....

It's an AP report, has been yesterday online on various sites, is mentioned here on A2K in various threads and has been been published today/yesterday in the international press.

(I wonder, how someone can get the idea, National Geographics just makes a poll in Chicaho Shocked )

I would suggest they poll Europeans and ask them to point out Michigan on the map.

Walts continuing USA bashing is tiresome.

I'd like to poll Germany to see which is preferred, disco, or rock?

(betcha disco wins)

I thought it was you who said that Chicagonese(?) are clueless when it comes to geography. Because they don't own guns.

Maybe I misread your statement, though....

I said they were clueless as to how to answer the question, and that's not surprising.

I also wonder about the wording of the poll. For example:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

The border between North Korea and South Korea is not the most unfortified in the world?
