What should be done about illegal immigration?

@cicerone imposter,
I have a feeling that it is illegal alien propaganda that there is a significant retreat by illegal aliens. Public Radio had an interview with an alien advocate in the USA, who is from Mexico, and he said that the illegals are staying. He said that, if even they only found work here a couple days a month, they would make more money here than back in Mexico.

@Advocate,
Quote:
A federal report found the IRS improperly granted the $1,000 tax credit payments to millions of foreign workers, a lot of whom didn’t even pay any federal income taxes.

Many of the workers had used government-issued tax identification numbers " instead of Social Security numbers " on their tax returns.

Stop being so stupid. You can't get a tax credit unless you pay taxes.

I googled a bit... there was an political attack on Obama by a Republican congressman saying the stimulous would help illegal people. Then there was another story about how people were using ITIN numbers to claim dependents.

The first story is typical Republican political hackery, the second story is about people who are getting a credit on the taxes they are paying.

@Advocate,
Advocate, The cost of living here would make working just a couple of days every month prohibitive. How does one live on $100 income a month any place in the US?

As I stated before. In my view they should be deported ASAP.

@au1929,
Our government has failed everyone concerning immigration; they haven't even followed the rules they established, and they're afraid to tackle this issue again in congress.

@cicerone imposter,
I would kick their asses out. 1) They jump ahead of those who immigrate according to the rules, waiting for years and years. 2) They take jobs from citizens, especially minorities, in this time of high unemployment. 3) Many are resorting to crimes of various sorts. 4) They and their children are straining our resources. 5) They are essentially bankrupting a number of states and localities. Et seq.

I guess that O'Moron will weigh in any moment, telling us that we can accomodate a couple billion more people.

@au1929,
au, I gave up on congress not only about immigration but many other issues. They are a bunch of self-serving a-holes, and it's our fault for voting them in.

The uncontrolled influx of Latin illegal aliens, who congregate in certain areas and don't try to assimilate, represents a danger to our country.

"The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities."

Hispanic-Americans, many the direct descendants of immigrants in the last couple of generations, are the fastest growing voting block in the U.S. Hispanics were an important part in electoral victories for Obama in key states.

So don't worry about assimilation. Hispanic immigrants are participating in American democracy in record numbers.

@cicerone imposter,
Nope.

The immigrants who came here illegally assimilate as well (when they are given the chance)-- 23 years president Reagan gave an amnesty, now the recipients and their kids are voters (and doctors and lawyers etc.) .

Of course, the Nativists said the same thing about Irish and Italians immigrants as well... many of whom also came illegally (although I bet you couldn't tell from their grandchildren who probably don't even know themselves).

@ebrown p,
How is that "not legal?" I'm missing something here, but I'm not sure what it is.

@ebrown p,
It's good that you can laugh, but you haven't explained to me why those immigrants who voted weren't "legal."

@cicerone imposter,
The question was on whether how they got here makes any difference in terms of "assimilation". Many people are in the country because of illegal immigration (either because they crossed the border, or because their parents or grandparents did). By the second or third generation, it never makes any difference.

There are certainly millions of Americans who have at least one grandparent who immigrated illegally from Ireland, Italy, Poland, Greece or any number of countries. Yet now they are as American as you are-- in fact you probably would never know they are products of illegal immigration -- thanks to assimilation.

Ironically the same assimilation argument Advocate is using against today's unwanted ethnic groups were used against Irish, Italian and Jewish immigrants.

No, you were talking about "voting," and that's what I responded to.
