What noise does a man make when his balls are lopped off?

These singers, known by nicknames such as Nicolini, Senesino and Farinelli, and often notoriously temperamental, travelled around the courts and capitals of Europe, pulling the crowds wherever they performed...

Castrati were notoriously temperamental?! Well, I should hope so!!!

Bella, do you also dislike to hear female singers reaching high notes, or is your distaste to this one bit because of the castration factor? I'm not throwing stones since I used to make loud obnoxious fun at my boss for listening to opera, shutting him in his office - mostly kidding but not entirely. He got me back insidiously, since I eventually started to like operatic type singing/voices.

I don't like opera and/or any type of music in which the singer has to screech to reach high notes. Example: Sarah Brightman. Delightful voice when in lower ranges but when she gets up there, yikes. Can't stand her.

I just think that the voice of a casterated man is obnoxious. Plain and simple.

On a side note, I do tend to dislike boys choirs as well.

Ah, the castrati, the 'voice of the angels'.

It is a pity that there are no recordings of the great castrati voices.

The most famous castrato, Carlo Broschi Farinelli was called the 'Divine Farinelli and with good reason. With a range of four octaves he was known (and loved) for his ability to sing two hundred and fifty notes with a single breath and to sustain a note for more than a minute.

His life is well recorded, at least compared to many other castrati. The exact number is unknown but he was portrayed in art hundreds of times.

It must have been bliss, being able to experience one of his performances.

Do you think James Blount was casterated? How else does he sing so high?

Almost correct, linkat.

James lost a testicle during a mixing accident whilst using one of those hand whisk gadgets, whipping up a meringue.

Of course, James Blount is only his stage name, as the marketing men didn't think that he would sell as many records going under his real name of Ivor Bollokoff.

No, he wasn't actually.

I guess it would be like if 10,000 years from now, the only example of television they could find would be episodes of Dharma & Greg.

I guess it's unfortunate they never recorded Farenelli...he was supposed to have been the greatest.
They did a movie about Farenelli, forget the name...for the voice they used a female soprano, but did something digitally to the voice to give it that male tone.

Here's a link that plays approximations of what a castratis voice would sound like....someone like farinelli...

Farinelli died in 1782 Bella. The last castrato, Alessandro Moreschi, died in 1922. His voice is the only one in record for obvious reasons. Sad
