L.E. this may be an urban legend, but I have heard that the Vienna Boy's choir was comprised of castrati.

Quote:
In 17th and 18th Century Italy, about 4,000 boys were castrated each year, from the age of eight upwards, with the aim of making a fortune as opera singers and soloists with choirs in churches and royal palaces.

Talk about commitment.

The noise usually starts with the word "I" and ends with "do."

Attached below is a link I found thourh m'lords story of another Alessandro Moreschi recording of him singing Ave Maria...

I think this one is a better example.

When I closed my eyes, I had a very strange sensation listening to this. It did give a different tone that a woman would have a difficult time acheiving.

For a moment, I could feel the sadness of being a castrati....then, you could hear the pride of having that voice.

Click below and give a listen....It's worth it.

I liked it actually....I think there were layers to it we aren't used to hearing.

listen to me, I'm the one that doesn't even like music, and I can see something in this....

God, if I had testicles, I'd go get them cut off right now.

I listened to the second one with Moreschi.

Oooooooooh.

I also found it strangely moving to hear the real thing.

Will go back and listen to the bbc clip.

I don't have the plug-in for the bbc clip. Oh well, the second clip gives me the idea.

Bella, do you also dislike to hear female singers reaching high notes, or is your distaste to this one bit because of the castration factor? I'm not throwing stones since I used to make loud obnoxious fun at my boss for listening to opera, shutting him in his office - mostly kidding but not entirely. He got me back insidiously, since I eventually started to like operatic type singing/voices.
