Why wuss out? If yer gonna go battery, go with a Group 8D Marine Deep Cycle or better, something with around 1200 Cold Cranking Amps @ 0°F (-18°C) and about 225 Amp Hours of rated constant-load output @ 32°F (0°C).
Ya wanna get a sealed Gell Cell type; they don't leak, and can be mounted in any position - even inverted. With a 2½-farad capacitor to handle the starting load, one of those puppies will run a small arc welder for several minutes.
And of course, in a pinch, you can always use it to jump-start your car.
