Commiserating. Not much help, I'm sure, but I'm in your boat.

@BorisKitten,
This is why I'm petless. Wrings hands. However, I've been petless many times before and I notice an increased madness for other peoples' pets on my part, each time. Some of the pleasure and none of the work.

Good news from the rv rambler.. I did fine with two cats in the rv for three days, and then the same two cats in a house for another bunch of days.
Slight asthma the first night, but not enough to get up and find the inhaler. Nothing the other days. They were shorthairs. Hmmm, maybe my allergies do vary. In my past I've been allergic to all cats all the time, except for Tom, whom I was allergic to but not as wildly as others. Photo of Tom forthcoming one of these days.

I trust the allergy stuff is about some saturation point or words to that effect, maybe sensitization point, and on this trip I didn't get past that.

@ossobuco,
They claim there are some breeds (of cats) that cause fewer allergic reactions than others.

For me, my allergies seem to come and go. Some cat breeds, and I use this term loosely, since all of my cats have been mixes/strays, are purported to provoke fewer allergic reactions in people (Wikipedia):

Quote:
There has been a disputed claim based on antigen research that the Siberian and Russian Blue breeds may be naturally hypoallergenic. Similarly, cat breeds such as the LaPerm, Sphynx, Devon Rex, and Cornish Rex, which lack some of the normal layers of cat fur, are generally held by mild allergy sufferers to be significantly less likely than other breeds to provoke an allergic reaction.

As we all know, Boris is a Russian Blue (stray/rescue), and frankly he provokes fewer allergic reactions in ME than my Maine Coon/Siberian mix (Happy) or Domestic Short Hair (Nut). Nut is all-black, and I've read that all-black cats may provoke more allergies in folks than other cats. True? I dunno!

I can snuggle right into Boris's fur and experience no reaction at all. Happy (medium-hair) makes me rinse my face afterwards.

Obviously I still stuff my face into all 3 of my baby-cats, believing that any allergies are worth it.

@BorisKitten,
We had an all black cat, not particularly longhaired, and I was allergic. Eh, I think it has to do with exposure and sensitization. I had enough years of ferocious allergy to shun all that now, while I still love cats. I was really glad to get to know my cousins' cats on this last trip, both saved from feral cat colonies on Catalina Island. I'd been worried about progressing through asthma tharn, but that didn't happen.

@ossobuco,
Funny, I've noticed my other allergies depend on exposure.

Fer instance I'm allergic to Opiates, period. However, I can take an Opiate (Codeine, for example) for some 36 hours before I become deathly ill.

I've never understood this, but I do believe you're right. Solution? Spend several days with your kitten-of-choice before adopting. Oh, the snuggles and joys!

Most of you have already seen these two, most likely. (Posted to another thread, by Deb, I think.) But while we're in gooey gushy mode ....
Very Happy

My kitten's eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her tongue's red;
If snow be white, why then her paws are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires shed on my bed;
I have seen kittens able to land right,
My kitten, when she jumps, she really freaks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight,
Than fishy breath that from my kitten reeks.
I love to hear her squeak, yet well I know
That music has a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go,
My kitten, when she moves, gallumphs around.
And yet by heaven I think my kit as rare
As any cat who dances in the air!

@msolga,
Ms.O,in case you were wondering....

Here's an upclose and personal view of Oldtimer's scars.

I swear it's developed bark similar to that of a tree; and look at the
knot where a branch broke away when it took a fall from a table.

What a survivor, neko!

Though I'm certain TLC has something to do with it. Smile
