'Twas Bill Bennett evidently. This was what I remember seeing just before "Tojo":

Bill Bennett, the conservative talk show host and CNN commentator, made an interesting point on CNN this morning, a point you'll likely be hearing a lot more of for some time.

In reacting to the New York Times's story on Sen. John McCain and the lobbyist Vicki Iseman, Bennett said: "The New York Times has done something for John McCain he couldn't do for himself," by rallying the conservative base behind the senator from Arizona.

Yes. This might be a consequence.

On the point of hypocrisy, I wonder if that base which the Virtue Czar refers to will be happy with an adulterer and adultress as their standard-bearers.

Yep, just read the New York Times and anyone can know what not to believe. Pretty simple.

Nice that you've caught on.

I guess you could read the Washington Post or TNR as well, they all carried stories about this. Oh, and Howard Kurtz. And the today show sez they knew about it. Apparently it was what is known as a 'open secret.'

We've discussed Republican election strategies. Might as well be fair...

Stupid Foreignervanian question to the Americans in this thread: Why is it that thinly sourced allegations of McCain sleeping with a lobbyist are a big ethical deal, when his "bo, bo, bomb bomb Iran" doesn't even rise to the level of a tiny ethical deal?

Talk about weird priorities ....

Americans ....

Because his "bo, bo, bomb bomb Iran" are actually the lyrics to a very popular song from the early 1980's.
Since when has it been unethical to sing part of a song?

Really? I'd thought he sang it to the tune of Barbara Ann.

Well, no, "Ba ba ba Barbara Ann..." were the lyrics (and from further back than the 80's). He changed things up a bit.

He did.
During the Iranian Hostage Crisis, when Jimmy Carter was President, a group from New Orleans named "Vince Vance and the Valiants" recorded a song called "Bomb Iran".
It was done to the tune of the Beach Boys hit BarbraAnn, and was recorded in 1980 or 81.

http://vincevance.com/new/facts.html

Quote:
Vince Vance & the Valiants has recorded 22 singles, 11 albums of which two are number one hits: Bomb Iran of 1980-81, written during the Hostage Crisis, and All I Want for Christmas is You of 1989-2005, the number one country Christmas song and the most-requested song at Christmas each of those years.

So, McCain may have exhibited poor taste when he sang the lyrics, but thats all it was.

I know the Beach Boys tune was older then the 1980's, I was talking about the Vince Vance tune.

(Actually, the Beach Boys song was a [released in 1965] cover version of an original 1961 song, by performed by The Regents.)

See video above.

Besides:
Quote:
The group is also known for its 1980 song titled "Bomb Iran", which was recorded in the midst of the Iranian hostage crisis and sung to the tune of "Barbara Ann" by The Beach Boys and The Regents. Later, in 2003, the group recorded a song called "Bomb Iraq", sung to the tune of "Yakety Yak" and supporting the imminent Iraq war.

Looking at McC, whose face resembles a person who has been severely beaten physically, it is hard to imagine that he had a sexual relationship with the lobbyist. But I guess it is possible that the latter was desperate to curry favor with McC to benefit her clients.
