LordE Actually Fartwa. Its more pervasive.

Muslim1. Today is a holy day I believe. I just saw demonstators in Iran symbolically whipping themselves. In Gaza a banner featuring the decapitated head of someone stuck on a spike. Other demonstrators waving real swords about with (probably not real) blood on them. Also a horse covered in a sheet with several spears or arrows apparantly sticking out of it with lots more blood. Whats going on? And why all the blood?

It is the holy day of Ashoora. For more info, there is a specific thread for it: http://www.able2know.com/forums/about68828.html

Regarding what you saw on TV, the Shia Muslims commemorate the day when Hussein (May Allah be pleased with him), the grand son of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) was martyred.
The violent celebrations are denounced by the majority of the scholars of Islam. Indeed, we are so sorry for the way Imam Hussein (May Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, but this does not mean we need to punish ourselves for something we did not commit.
Instead, we should fast Ashoora to celebrate the day in which the believers (Moses (on whom be peace) and the Israelites) crossed the Red Sea and pharaoh's army was drowned in the water.

And Allah knows best.

So the violent celebrations should be denounced in favor of celebrating the annihilation of an entire army? Makes sense, I suppose.

Oh, I rather doubt it.

Can you speak for yourself or are you confined to the metaphor of that which you have read? Can you say anything that you have thought through critically or is it simply a programmed response?

Please, show us a sign of life.

That it would seem is asking for the imposible. It would appear that only reading and memorization are stressed not thinking and reasoning. That it would seem is an affliction of the truly religious of all religious persuations.
The answer is always in the book.

Muslim1, on another thread you wrote

"Ashoorah, or the 10th of Muharram commemorates the day in which the believers (Israelites) crossed the Red Sea and pharaoh's army was drowned in the water. This is what I meant by "the victory of Moses (Peace be upon him) over the pharaoh"."

and you said much the same a few posts back on this thread. So what has Ashoorah got to do with celebrating the martyrdom of Hussein?

The martyrdom of Hussein (May Allah be pleased with him) happened to be exactly on the 10th of Muharram on the Islamic year 61 (680 AD).

But the basic celebration of Ashoora (10th of Muharram every year) is for the day in which the believers (Israelites) crossed the Red Sea and pharaoh's army was drowned in the water.
