Saw Vicky Cristina Barcelona yesterday. Ah, the many & varied ways of love! I quite enjoyed it, though I much prefer earlier Woody Allen. But anyway, it was fun, Barcelona is just gorgeous & Penelop Cruz stole the show. (She was wonderfully entertaining!Laughing)

Quote:
SYNOPSIS:
Two New York girlfriends, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) take a summer holiday in Barcelona on the eve of Vicky's wedding to business executive Doug (Chris Messina). At a bistro one night, a flamboyant local artist, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) invites them on a weekend of hedonistic fun a short flight away - in a small borrowed plane he flies himself. Vicky's reserve is overcome by Cristina's daring and a fabulous weekend is had. But something changes for them all and the situation is further complicated by the return - under dramatic circumstances - of Juan Antonio's ex-wife, Maria Elena (Penelop Cruz) with whom he has a tempestuous relationship.

Anyone seen this one yet? The Class. I've read some really excellent reviews. I think it might be next on my list.

The promo trailer for Revolutionary Road looked interesting yesterday. But I see a mixed bag of revues on Rotten tomatoes. Anyone seen it? Recommendation?

I was reluctant to watch Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys - didn't want to have to endure a bunch of gimmicky sentimentalism, which is what I expected. What I saw was a very satisfying morality tale acted out by a very good cast. Cheryl really liked it, but she's a bigger sucker for a tear jerker than even I.

Just s aw "Righteos Kill" last night. Its got a minor twist that gave itself away early (its fun looking for the McGuffins aint it?). Other than that, its Deniro and Pacino again.
Heres the trailer

Saw Revolutionary Road yesterday & loved it. To me, the film was just about perfect: the acting was convincing, the storyline very believable, the cinematography & music score brilliant, etc, etc...

So Imagine my surprise when I read this review. I couldn't have disagreed more! It was as though I'd seen a completely diffrent film to the reviewer:

Quote:
Winslet and DiCaprio apply to their roles the kind of energy that makes empathy irrelevant. There's no possibility of liking them. They're so thoroughly swamped by the misery of their predicament that you find yourself flinching every time they raise their voices.

As a portrait of a bad marriage the film can't be faulted. Bitter truths ricochet off every surface of the Wheelers' increasingly disordered living room but because we've never seen them at their best - except for those brief, blithe moments at the beginning - their story never rises to the level of tragedy. Or even poignancy.

Hmmm. I think it's fair to say that this is a film you'll either love or hate, depending on your response to the subject matter. I can see that some might see it as a (far too) slow-moving, tedious soap opera about a marriage breakdown ... yet others, on the other hand, might be as impressed & engrossed by the conflict between conformity & freedom as I was.

I neglected to say that Kate Winslet was totally convincing in her role. An outstanding performance in a difficult (& not terribly "sympathetic" role), I thought. But then Leonardo DiCaprio was pretty convincing, too, as was the rest of the cast.
(And the recreation of the 1950s on the big screen: stunning!)

@msolga,
Wow. Hate hate hated that movie. I wanted to punch every person in it in the face.

I had no sympathy for either character, neither of whom seemed to realize what it is to really struggle in life... just endless bitching by people who never have had to go hungry ever, who have no clue what they are yearning for, just something different.

Bleh. Glad someone liked it tho!

Let the Right One In

Let the Right One In (Swedish: Låt den rätte komma in) is a 2008 Swedish romantic horror film directed by Tomas Alfredson. It is based on the novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. It tells the story of a bullied 12-year-old boy who develops a friendship with a vampire in Blackeberg, a suburb to Stockholm. The film has received widespread international critical acclaim and has won numerous awards, including the "Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature" at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation's 2008 Méliès d'Or (Golden Méliès) for the "Best European Fantastic Feature Film".

Surprised

Laughing

Well I did say it was a film to love or hate, Cyclo.
So you're a hater & I'm a lover .... Wink

Just curious, did you see it with your fiance? I ask because I'm wondering if women might be more sympathetic to the subject matter .... ?

Nope, unfortunately.

But, it didn't strike you, that these people were so vociferous in their unhappiness with their lives - but with no real examination of the problems and trials and tribulations that others must go through, instead presented as some sort of ideal?

I suppose I also had a hard time with the movie, b/c I have a very low opinion of infidelity. I was filled with contempt for both main characters and their inability to imagine how bad life could be for other folks, and their unwillingness to do what was necessary to make themselves happy in life, instead choosing to cause harm to those around them.

@dlowan,
Ah. That's one's on my list too, Deb.
Could you tell us a little more about what you like so much about it?

Quite a number of good films around & the moment. A bit worried some of them may be gone before I get the chance to see them all.

i want to read the book, most things i've read have praised the movie for being very faithful to the book, with the book fleshing out the characters a little more
